Took my Coupe to BMW to diagnose knocking from the front end

So I've been feeling a knocking/clunking through the steering wheel for a while when turning at low speeds so decided to get it checked out yesterday. After looking at it they found that there was slight play in the steering rack and a replacement rack would be required eventually. I'm devastated as this will be a £1k repair job. I am going to leave it as its not too bad at present and I can put up with the knocking noise.

Has anybody here bought an aftermarket steering rack? Is it worth it or am I better off going through BMW?

EDIT : I've taken it to another BMW dealership for a second opinion and it wasn't the steering rack after all. It that was needed was tightening up the strut brace. Problem solved!

Was that at main dealer, find yourself a recommend independent and get another quote, that should reduce labour cost an get a price for the part from soper in Lincoln or harry fairbairn an mention the forum

if it passes the Mot and its not dangerous i'd soldier on as long as possible, and as Mark says - find a good local indie
