How the hell does 3 numbers make more than 4 numbers :o
Think I'm gonna have to stop doing it.

Unfortunately they set aside X amount for each pot and of your unlucky enough to be in a pit with lots of people the pay out is reduced.

I can only assume that they expect significant amount of 3 number tickets but yes considerably less people matching 4 but only what quarter of a mil pot? Doesn't seem right.

Edit - how come over £5mil was the pot for 3 numbers but only £720 odd K as a jackpot??? :!:

They have to pay out ALL the 'match 3' winners at the guaranteed rate (was £10, now £25), before the other pots are split into their ratio. So if there are more 'match 3' winners than normal then the pots for the other prizes decreases. That's why they say the 'estimated jackpot is £xm' as they can't guarantee what it will be until the draw has taken place.

I've been on both sides.

Once I got 4 numbers and the pot was shared with a lot less than normal, so I got £250

Another time I got 5 numbers, and the pot was shared with a lot more than normal and I got about £400.

I won £25 last night

I believe that it's because many people pick numbers using birthdays of their nearest-and-dearest, so because all the numbers drawn were 31 or below it increased the chances of these 'birthday lines' matching 3 numbers quite significantly

A quick bit of a fag packet maths and I think it works out that, if your numbers and the balls drawn are all in the range 1-31, the chance of a jackpot drops from 1 in 13,983,816 to 1 in 736,281 and the chance of matching 3 drop from (roughly) 1 in 57 to (roughly) 1 in 11

As mentioned, the match 3 payout is fixed whereas each of the other tiers is allocated a fixed percentage of the remaining prize fund after deduction of the match 3 payouts

6 numbers and only 360k, hardly a jackpot
Agree with that. I share with another 5 people and to think we hit the jackpot and ended up with £60000 after being in since the start would be a tad disappointing :!:
£60000 would come in handy though.......

10 of us at work ,but I do Saturdays own my own also.

Part of the problem is the number of 'lottery' channels they've created.

The pot of money that people have to spend hasn't increased, so neither has the prize fund, so Camelot are just making more, smaller winners.

You used to have 1 Saturday draw, and nothing else.

Then you had 1 on Wed and 1 on Sat, and (for example) 25% of the spend went into the Wed, and 75% went into Sat.

Then you had 1 on Wed, 1 on Sat, and a daily play - so less went into the 'big' Wed & Sat draws.

Then you had a couple of scratchards, then 10 scratchcards, then 100 scratchcards, etc.

So as the number of channels for the same spend increases, each of the 'pots' decrease. Camelot prefer the multiple channels as they can incur notional 'costs' for each and make a fortune doing what Branson was going to do as a non-profit.

Wow, £360k for the jackpot.....my "if I won the lottery" dreams may have to be reigned in slightly.

Basically from PerryGunn points out, you're better off picking all of your numbers from 31+, so that if you win (same probability), you're more likely to scoop a bigger prize!
