To TT or not to TT, that is the question?

Well chaps I have been offered a TT at a great price with lots of nice spec and even a good price for my Z4. I have been pondering the sell of the car for a couple of months just for a change, I rarely keep cars longer than a year as I get bored. I have had the Z4 for nearly 18 months and really enjoy it so in no rush to change, but as I mentioned its a great price!

What I need are peoples opinions of the new TT, any previous owners that have advice and what do you think overall?

Just an iPhone snap, and the car is very dirty!

Prefer the new one to the old. If you're tempted and the money is all good then you're probably already sold on the idea right?!

I am tempted by it, the only thing putting me off is the fact it is only front wheel drive. It was very nice to drive with more torque than expected but the traction control light spent more time on, than off!

I wonder if anybody has made the move from TT to Z4 on here?

I think with some decent tyres the front wheel drive isn't a massive issue in the warmer months.

Quattro is a proper TT imo.

I came from a mk1 TT and still am pretty active on the TTForum, if you want to ask anything specific they'll be more than willing to help. My mom also owns a new shape one and been as a passenger in a 2.0l fwd, diesel and a TTS.

personal choice, but i don't think it looks as good as the zed, obviously i am very biased

The front tyres do need replacing on the car and I suspect were part of the reason for the lack of traction. I think I will get on the TTForum for some advice thanks!

Taz....I thought you would like the fact it doesn't have a soft top :P I do agree the Z4 is a stunning looking car, but that isn't why I fancy the change.

I am sure I have seen someone on here with a signature showing a new TT in black.

If it was the 2.0T convertible with quattro I would say yes, but not the coupe version as the age old arguments still apply.

i wouldnt but as ur sig says
If it doesn't put a smile on your face, it's time to do something else!"
if the z is not ur bag anymore move on.

I had a TTS for a week on loan from Audi a couple of years ago. Found it a hoot for a few days and a good, well put together car, but I thought I'd get bored of it very quickly. The engine sounded crap and at the end of the day it was just a highly strung 4 pot.

I'm like Taz (very biased), but to me they have no soul, like most Audi's.

I like the TT but in all honesty it lacks drama, the 2WD will be frustrating in the wet if other sporting FWD VAG motors are anything to go by and the colour would not be first choice for a TT (IMO). But it will be a more practical and probably cheaper car to run............Don't do it :(

How was the TTS pace wise compared to the M?

It was quick, especially 0-30mph as you would expect with the 4wd. The M though would be ahead by 60mph and then would drop it quite quickly. At the time I had a 3.0i Z4R (231 BHP) and it was a good few car lengths quicker than that because I did a standing start test with my mate as a benchmark. Overall I'd say it's probably about the same pace as either the facelifted Roadster/Coupe with the 260-odd BHP version of the 3-litre.

The TTS though was an easier car to drive quickly than the M is but then I've always liked a challenge ! :driving:

Thanks for the opinions, I think the overall decision is to walk away from this one. Mainly due to the fact it is FWD and a few other things that gave me doubt after going through the TTForums advice. I have to admit, the TT was a lovely car but it will have to be a Quattro or maybe a TTS to be the right car for me.

It is a very good price but not the right car to keep a smile on my face. For the record, the car is a 56 plate, 45k miles, full Audi history, long MOT/TAX/Service, £13,500 including 4 new premium tyres.

bobby, i love your signature, thats the shape for me, just like the zed, the TT just ain't got it

personally i looked at a TT before i got my Z and came to the same conclusion as you.. needs to be a TTS... or a quattro at a minimum.

Doesn't the TT use the Haldex system which effectively drives just the front wheels rather than being a proper quattro system as used in the A4 and up models? The rear wheels only get power when the front slips, so really for everyday use and the majority of the time it behaves the same as a fwd car. That's certainly how the older TT system worked anyway, I assume it's the same on the mk2.

Haldex splits it constantly but more bias on front. Blue haldex splits it with slot more bias to rear.

It was near enough to wheelspin, even with 280bhp. 4wd lauches were fun.

I do love my MGB's and the Sebring body kit looks awesome!

I had a Golf v6 4motion that used to keep traction all day long! Haldex is now used by lots of manufacturers due to its success. I thought the proper 'Quattro system' was reserved for the RS models etc, but don't quote me on that. Either way Quattro or Haldex, its still better than FWD only!
