To Start or Not to start, that is my question???

Easy peeps, so an update on getting my z4 back up on the road after sitting still for 2 years. Had good old BIGWINN replace my corroded brake lines (pukka job btw), me and my bro replaced rear drums brakes and callipers as they were seized. Now the big question, its going to my local garage for an inspection 2 aswell as an engine flush. Should i replace the engine oil, put in some fresh shell vpower fuel and a new battery and crank the engine by hand before crossing my fingers and fire it up and driving it to my local garage OR just get it trailered to the garage and let them work they're magic????

Why do you have doubts about starting after 2 years?
If there's oil in the engine and you haven't let water get inside it then there shouldn't be any issue if you have been changing the oil regularly before the 2 year hiatus.

It sounds like you're hoping to transfer the risk of something going wrong to the garage and I would suggest that if the engine is seized or something does go wrong on the first crank that they won't accept any liability whatsoever!

Just make sure it's topped up to the correct level for oil and coolant and crank to see what happens. It can only go one of 2 ways!
 :poke:

True on the liability aspect, its a case of either letting the professionals do it or my clumsy self having a crack at it first.

F**k it, i'm gonna do it myself. Just need advice on this checklist i'm gonna do before firing this beast back up.

1- tablespoon of oil through the spark plug holes
2- handcrank to make sure engines turning
3- drain oil and then top with fresh amber nectar
4- top up coolant
5- fill up a petrol can of some shell vpower and pour in the tank
6- new battery
7- cross fingers and turn the magic key

Anything missed or in the wrong order?

You need to get rid of the old petrol thats still in the tank and lines. Put fresh in, fresh battery and start it up. Don't mess about with any of that other stuff. If the petrol is okay I'll be amazed if it doesn't start up as normal.

Hi mate, i'm seeing some mixed answers on the old fuel after researching this. I know that there's hardly any fuel left in the tank, and siphoning is a bit difficult as the tank has a hump in it apparently. So draining it all out might be a challenge, i'm being told just throw some vpower and run it through??????

Forget about point 3 draining oil and replacing with fresh oil. Just get it started and up to gemp before you replace fhe oil or do a flush.

If you disconnect the line under the bonnet then turn the key it will pump all the old fuel out for you.

And suck all that lovely sediment from the tank through the filter.
Maybe better to dilute with a full tank of regular.
Dont waste money on v power, its a nonsense.

that's a lot of jerry cans, doesn't it hold around 50 litres?

Oiling the bore first is not essential, but lets just say it doesn't fire up straight away: in that case you're running those pistons up and down quite slowly with no real lubrication happening. I realise I'm fairly old school, but my mechanical sympathy would stick a little bit in the bore first as insurance.
Regarding fuel, I agree V-Power will be a waste of money at this point. If it's been low on reserve all that time then there's not much to go stale.
I think I'd stick at least two or three gallons of fresh standard stuff in to give a good dilution.
Then fire it up, but have someone looking under the bonnet just in case there are issues.
Be ready to turn it off quick.

Oh and you've not mentioned coolant? Check that's all well topped up too.
