To SORN or not to SORN?

My road tax is due and I'm thinking I might keep the Z4 off the road until the spring - it's a second car and doesn't get much winter use. OTOH, there are those nice winter days when a blast in the open air is nice, and there's always the worry that leaving a car for 4-5 months unused isn't the best for it mechanically. If your Zed is a second/weekend car, what do you do?
 
I'd not bother, you're going to save perhaps 4 or 5 months tax, so maybe £100. You'll still have to pay the insurance and will miss the odd nice day to get out and give the car a run.
 
Look at the weather today, bloody beautiful. If it's dry and no salt on the road I will go out in mine, not worth what you save if the weather is good IMHO

I SORN mine as I get a big discount on my insurance as well as saving the road tax. Over the winter we keep the 4x4 and the Merc saloon taxed as it's dark early and we always spend a few weeks away on holiday in November / December.
 
It's not just dry winter days out, spring is tending to come earlier nowadays too, some good days to be had in March / April generally. We hardly had a winter this year in the Peak District, I had loads of runs out even though whatever car I have is a garage queen... :oops: Having said that this year will probably be horrendous and you'll be snowed in for months... :D

Keep it taxed, it's only the cost of a good night out. :thumbsup:
 
I cancel my insurance (locked in garage) and SORN for a few months depending on when the weather gets bad...if it stays decent till past xmas wouldn't bother but if its snowing in November then usually worth it. The insurance is the bigger saving.
 
Being sat 4-5 months isn't going to harm a car. My track car is regularly sat for that long and will take abuse all day long when i get it out.
 
Thanks for the views guys. I decided in the end to tax it and use it if I can when the weather's good. I bought it to enjoy it so there's no point wasting the opportunity for the sake of £100 a year.
 
Don't do it. Enjoy your Zed on those few beautiful crisp winter days and nights. There's no better feeling. :driving:
 
EXACTLY! What is the point of buying a car and not driving it? Popping it away in a garage for SIX MONTHS a year, get a grip. Drive the thing and just enjoy it.
