To refurb before trackday or after?

My 224s are booked in for refurb tomorrow. I am booked on another trackday a week on Saturday.

Should I wait until after the trackday before having my alloy refurbished? My alloys are in a pretty bad state cosmetically. Some of the paint has completely disappeared so I'm down to what looks like the actual raw wheel surface. I obviously don't want it to be left like that for very long at all. The only downside that I can think of to having the wheels refurbed before the trackday is if I do a bit of sightseeing into the kitty litter and ruin my shiny new wheels.

I'm split at the moment. Anyone have any input?
 
The only reason I could see for having them done before your track day is if you think the rims may have some hairline cracks and you want them checked/welded before subjecting them to the stress of high-speed cornering other than that, if your only delaying the refurb for a couple of weeks it seems sensible to wait.

Even if a bit of additional corrosion appears over the next couple of weeks, a full refurb should include shot-blasting to remove any corrosion so it'll be fine.
 
I have absolutely no worries with regards to structural integrity. It's purely a cosmetic/corrosion issue.

I think you are probably right and it may be best to hold off.
 
100% hold off. Getting the brakes up to silly temps and then firing seriously hot brake dust all over your fresh wheels will leave you wanting to break down.
 
The counter argument is how many track days are you doing this year ? So unless you get some track wheels this is going to happen within a few weeks of the refurb.
 
That's very true Rob. I will probably do about 4-5 given the chance. As it turns out, it looks like I am going away next Friday so will miss the trackday anyway.

The wheels will be powder coated and well sealed so I think they should stand up to track work pretty well. The finish also comes with a 12month guarantee so if they become discoloured or anything then I should be covered - obviously I was never on track :wink:

I have however, cancelled the refurb until I am home from this trip.
 
Why not buy yourself some track wheels? See my latest photos, I currently have my style 32's on, 17 inch wheels that I use for track/winter. It's lovely burning up 17 inch rubber and then being able to go back to my 18 inch 224's. Not only that, but the cars feel more nimble on 17's in my opinion anyway.

You're right, I'm fairly sure they won't fit the ///M but will the 3L over standard discs.
