TMC Tuning Box

Has anyone got any experience of putting a TMC Tuning box on their E89?

Thinking seriously about it and have sent an email off to them asking for more info. There are some posts on the 1.8 vs 2.0 discussion but seems I could get some good performance improvement with this.

Looking into warrenty and insurance - want to make sure its all legal ;)

Web site is here ....http://www.tmcmotorsport.com/

I've not heard of anyone on here tuning the N20 engine.

Warranty wise it will obviously invalidate the remainder of any BMW warranty. AC Schnitzer do a tuning package and I think their warranty on the engine runs alongside the length of BMWs warranty from first date of registration. i.e. if the car is a year old you will get 2 years tuning warranty, or if the car is 2 years old then a years tuning warranty.

I would only tune the engine if there is a suitable back up warranty that covers engine/gearbox or your prepared to cover the cost of repairs. Personally I would be wary as the N20 is a bit of an unknown and I have a feeling a fragile powerplant.

Tim.

I hear what you are saying but if the engine is already tuneable by BMW up to 2.0 and 2.8 from 1.8 I won't be putting any extra stress. Me taking a warranty though is essential which they offer

This is assuming all the ancillaries are the same i.e. Intake and Exhaust systems, if not this may have an impact on things. I would imagine there are subtle changes to these as TMC can only tune up to about 235bhp and BMW manage 245bhp. I doubt there would be any internal differences.

Sounds like a good deal for the price, but I guess the main considerations have been laid out by Tim above. The last consideration would be whether the power delivery will be as good as the standard, it may be perfect but it also may be undriveable day to day.

Let us know what it's like if/when you have a go with it

Not to mention whether the turbos are any different, injectors, fuel systems etc. They may not only down tune the engine, but they may also fit lower spec parts. I've no idea if that information is obtainable?

I thought I had seen a post on here saying everything was the same except the front brakes.

Anyhow got an email from them today - its a no go as they no longer offer the warranty for engine and gearbox :(

oh well have ordered my stubby as an alternative modification LOL

I may also look at adding some playing cards held on with washing pegs to make a nice noise on the alloys spokes like I used to do as a kid on my bike

Just as an update for any that are interested.

Did some quotes on confused.com - add's about £100 to premium on insurance - TMC no longer do the warrenty so while I am keen to get one I dont want to take the risk on a new car so looks like I need to wait 3 years but probably wont have the car still then :(

Why would you wait 3 years then possibly damage the car with a remap? Its going to cost as much to put right then as it is now (IF it happens, which it might not) so why wait?

Maybe because I want to have all possible common issues repaired in warranty that could be declined after installing funny tuning maps (e.g. injectors, HPFP, wastegates etc.)? These issues can appear with or without tuning within the first years...

Best regards

Mick
