Tire rotation question

So anyways I was thinking that since with Big O Tyres I have free tire rotation for so many miles that I would get my tires rotated soon. However it clicked that the front tires are 225's and the rears 255's, which basically I should not rotate front to rears since the sizes are like that right? Wouldn't that impair handling quite a bit?

aeobus - you have to be on a wind up to put the wide on the front and narrow on the rear...lol

As an aside I do not believe rotation is sensible in most instances. In a Z4 all you could do is swap left to right on the axle. This of course means the tyre rotate the opposite way and needs to wear itself down while it rebeds itself and builds new stress patterns in. All you do is wear it quicker.

Real advantages of rotation are on certain 4x4's due to their transfer case design where thread depth needs to be identical on all 4 wheels to prevent transmission wind up and on cars with identical size tyres all round from front to rear, to overcome uneven wear caused by steering, tracking settings, acceleration.

Personally never rotated a set in my life

Just dont do that with directional tyres :?

I rotate my tyres every day... it's the only way the car will move...

... sorry, i'll get my coat... :tumbleweed:

In all seriousness though, i've never done that with my tyres ever... doubt I ever will

Of course - I guess I should have added that as the final nail in the coffin of the idea on Z's.

I decided against the sport package mainly for this reason - having all 4 wheels identical allows full tire rotation. I've rotated the OEM Potenzas about every 5000 miles, and the tread left on each one is almost equal, with about half remaining at around 20,000 miles of total usage.

The winter Dunlop M3s are directionals, so I've rotated those every 5000 front to back and vice versa (no criss cross, obviously). Once the left hand side tires are worn down a decent amount more than the right side (a lot of right-hand turns with on and off ramps in my area) I plan on having the tires flipped on the rims so I can switch sides with them and keep the rotating going.

Personal preference, I guess - I don't mind waiting as long as possible before having to shell out another $1000 for new tires.

Helps when you take the wheels off every now and then to check the brake pads and other stuff in there, too....make sure it's all good.

Aebous, if I were you, I'd have them rotated side-to-side as long as it's free anyway - why not? Will help keep the wear even....

Don't see what the problem is with rotating a staggered set-up. :idunno: Just drive in reverse all the time. Rear engine FTW!

Lol. Tanks for the comments, yeah i thought about the directional aspect as well. Since so many folk don't do it, I reckon I'll join the masses. Heh if I did the side to side I would still have to have them remounted as they are directional...I bet that isn't covered :P
