Timing Chain

Bought the car and going tomorrow to sign the papers etc. It's an E89 - "2012 BMW Z Series 2.0 Z4 Sdrive20i M - 2.0 Petrol Engine 181.0bhp". Husband asking if the timing chain should have been changed?

There was no recall on N20 engine timing chains in the UK
Unusual to see many that have been changed
You can check to see if it was changed by looking through the oil fill cap
White plastic guides equals later chain
Frequent oil changes and avoid stop start use are helpful
You can change it, it’s about a £1,000 project

Timing chain failures are a well known fault on the N20 engine. Timing chains are not changed as part of any routine servicing or schedule but it would good to know if your car has had it done. I believe if they fail they do so once the car gets to around 60,000 to 80,000 mile mark although someone may correct me if I am wrong. For peace of mind if there is no evidence of it being done then consider getting it done. As mentioned cost is about £1000.
