Timing Chain - The call.

My car sounded weird the other day.
I have checked for play in the timing chain, I can move it all around with an o-ring pick.

I once tried some time back and it wouldn't budge.

It’s an n20 from 2012. Looking for any recommendations from garages around Hereford, Worcester or Birmingham area which could do the job.

I've reached out to BMW for a base line quote, and the smallest cog, (because thats the only one I know) around here, but I doubt they will respond!

Any help appreciated.
I’m aware of the associated costs.

Thanks all.

Changing a timing chain and guides is a job that any decent garage should be able to do with their eyes shut IMO.

Are you doing the oil pump drive at the same time?

Given you need the best part of 20 BMW special tools I guess it’s a bmw cam chain guru or a well educated BMW Indy?

The febi kit I bought which is the bmw kit with the bmw logos ground off had the cam chain and guides and the oil pump drive..but the required crank sprocket was not included

The sprockets were upgraded to an etched surface to avoid spinning as the crankshaft bolt (Jesus bolt) holds them together. The pump is timed to the engine so best done together as the oil pump chain can also fail. It needs to come off anyway so best get it done while they are in there.

Cool, thanks, if it’s just a chain, I’m sure it won’t be too much more. I don’t suppose anyone has a part number for it?

There’s a bmw upgrade kit that includes cam chain guides and full oil pump drive unit

Ok, they are ordering the kit, but they didnt know what was it specifically. I hope there is a new tensioner in there!

Taken off for surgery.

Interestingly, the tension test is not a good indicator.
Mine was loose, then after firing it up to listen for a whine, it stopped back tight.

Car was noisy, sluggish and chain was loose.

BMW have replaced the parts now, finishing up tomorrow and road testing.

The oil pump drive was £700 extra, on top of the £1505 to replace the timing chain.

I opted out of this for now, as they said the bottom of the engine has to come off to fit it.
Timing chain is the top of the engine.

Hoping to collect Saturday. :driving:

Update:

Got the car back.

It sounds and drives better.

New white guides are installed.
Engineers confirmed there was chain stretch on the old one.

Get it done if you have concerns. It’s an expensive fix, but not as expensive as a broken engine!

It’s now home, washed & polished with some extreme gloss levels!

Looks great for a 13 year old car!

It’s worth it as you know the car and intend to keep it. You could buy another and spend the same again
