Hi Everyone,
So I bought my Z4 in October '15, it seemed to be fine no lights on dash and running well, then about 2/3 months later I had the EML light and Engine light come on. I took it to the garage Saturday and he says the timing chain and valvetronic motor needs replacing. I bought the car quite cheap so i'm not too bothered i have to spend a little on it as it was excepted but just not loads. Can anyone tell me their experience with any of the these two things?

I Just don't want to get ripped a new one!

Welcome to the forum.

I had my valvetronic motor replaced last year after getting stuck in the snow and breaking it, I believe the part was £250 from my local dealer and then my local garage charged me £40 to fit. I did need a new gasket and that was around £50.

No experience with the timing chain though.

Thanks for your help guys.

I have seen the valvetronic motor for £140 no labour included so that doesn't worry me as such.
The timing issue is what is worrying me and yes Srhutch I have been trolling every forum i can find and haven't come across this. He said something about special tools and guides, but while being very vague and not answering most of my questions.
On the phone this morning he said he wouldn't be able to properly give me a price until they open it up, but when i was there Saturday he kept me waiting for over 40 minutes supposedly checking the car, and told me it would come up to around £350 so he should then know how much it would be judging by what he saw and gave the price on??

the 2.0 engine is an N46 in the zed which is an evolution of the N42. I know the N42 in the E46 etc was notorious for timing chain issues due to weak tensioners but I'm not too familiar with the N46 that was used in the last of the E46's and later E90's. I've not heard of timing chain issues in the E90's but like I said that doesn't mean alot!

Thanks for all your help! The car has 180,000 a lot i know!
I think im going to take it in today or tomorrow driving around at 20MPH and doing £10 petrol a day is doing my head in.
