Ticking noise

Noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine, not sure what other people's thoughts are but I've got her booked into Darren Wood anyway.

It's only just had an inspection 2 (paid extra despite not been due). It's not a very bad sound but when driving past a wall or in a built up are it's noticeable.

Car is running fine.

Sure it's the engine - not a nail or a stone in your tyre ? Just a thought...

I thought that but the sound is quite consistent at different speeds.

I'm probably been paranoid but better to be safe then sorry. I'm booked in for the 6th of September! If nothing else it will put my mind at ease :). I'm the only one that notices it too.

There is a light tappety sound at idle from the S54, and this can change with adjusting shims at inspection services. However, if there is a new sound that persists throughout the rev range, I'd check your oil level.

First thing I did was check the oil, I just think I'm been paranoid.

:)

Try to listen to where the sound is coming from using a stethoscope or just a solid bar. The likely candidates are the valve gear at the top of the engine (the source of the normal tappety sound) or the vanos. If you google "S54 ticking" you will find you are not the only one worrying how much ticking is normal from this engine :)

If the noise is constant at different speeds logic says its not the engine, transmission or wheels. Mine makes ticking noises too. I just assume the wife has left a bomb somewhere for me...

It's a noisy car when cold, lots of scary rattles and ticks (i quite like it.. a raw motorsport feel to it...) .. then it warms up, starts driving faster.. and still ticks/rattles and complains about sub 30mph speeds :P

Just drive it harder, you'll forget about the noises :D
