Thruxton

Hi all,

A few weeks back I booked some days away with my wife in Cornwall. I live in Bath but the discussion was had that Thruxton was sort of on the way if you squinted a bit, hence dropping in to a Goldtrack day for an hour before lunch. Plenty of CSCC racers using it as practice, with one of them letting me take his Ginetta G20 race car out for a few laps, great fun in the corners but it took every bit of speed through church to reach 115mph before braking for the chicane. :D

With a couple of mm toe out added the handling on my Z4M that I enjoy has returned, allowing me to tighten the line by lifting the throttle, no more understeer, with a big lift getting the back out, great fun. Sorry the camera mount is loose and no mic this time, it had been 12 years or more since I'd last driven the circuit properly, hence less than ideal lines sometimes.

It needs another car (Tom) to chase to give an impression of speed as I was hitting an indicated 145mph before breaking for the chicane, but it's so open it looks slow. It was a very hot day and with such limited time I left the suitcases, shoes and other holiday stuff in the boot as it was firmly wedged in. I could feel the tyres going off as the pressure rose, very heavy tyre wear after two 15 minute stints.
I enjoyed it and went on to have a nice few days away in Coverack, I love the fact these cars transform from angry track machine to holiday cruiser so easily.

I laughed at the "I live in Bath & Thruxton is on the way to Cornwall bit", looks an epic day out.

I remember having a passenger ride in a Mazda 3 MPS a few years back around Thruxton, I was amazed how fast a standard road car handled through the bends even though it had 4 people on board, the only mods to this car was uprated brake pads & only when the standard ones had worn out.

Coincidentally this video flashed up on my YouTube feed yesterday, I did wonder whether it was someone on the forum. Almost identical looking to mine.

Out of interest, what have you done to bypass the exhaust?

A 3/4" pipe on each side bypasses the backboxes to allow a small amount of less silenced gas to reach the outside world. The longer I've lived with it the more I'd say it probably isn't worth it, not unpleasant but the M's have a decent bit of noise as standard and maybe add 10% to the exhaust volume only. The Eventuri intake made much more difference, well worth it. :)

I have only just done this bypass mod and am loving it as it doesn't intrude when cruising but much more rasp when stepping on. I don't have eventuri though although I am sure there is time :D

Love your track vids as well

Yep for those chasing noise, to me intake noise is far more preferable and on demand compared to a LOUD exhaust on all the time.
If I was to do it all again with my car I'd be seriously tempted by an eventuri et al. Close-ish to the noise of a CSL box with zero hassle.
If you want proper exhaust noise, put a supersprint/eismann system on... I can barely hear the CSL box now though it's that loud! :headbang:

Nice driving as usual Dave, looking forward to next monday :driving:

Great drive Dave, seeing your vid made me decide to try 0 deg toe rear, instead of 2mm toe in now.. My car does NOT behave as well as yours. :)

Next you'll have to try 2mm toe out, that's about what mine has got now

How does your car handle now? :)

As written in another thread, it's better than oem (as last year) but I've noticed this unsettling movements at the rear accelerating out of uneven surfaced bends..
Its almost like I'd have too much toe out but I suppose it could be the toe in.
