Don't need any help as such, just though I would share the problem I have had in case anyone else gets a similar issue.
My Z4 is a 2003 3.0 SMG
The problem originally started in December 2009 when we had the bad snow and I had to abandon the car about half a mile from home in Bracknell. I got back to the car the next day, started her up and she was hunting (reving on her own between 750 and 2000 rpm), EML light on, engine light on and no control of the throttle. Its was the week before Christmas so didn't have time to get it fixed until the new year. The garage (Munich Motors in Wokingham) cleared all the faults and got her running fine but did warn me there could be a more serious underlying issue
She was ok for a few months then the problem came back in April / May 2010 and I ended up having the throttle unit replaced at a cost of about £300 which again solved the problem for a while until a few weeks ago the problem came back (the garage informed me at the time that it can either be the throttle unit or a new ECU, throttle unit is cheaper so went for that option). Anyyway, problem came back in April 2011 so ended up having to get the new ECU at a cost of just over £1000. However, the new ECU threw out the throttle unit from May 2010 that was replaced so the ECU and the throttle unit had to be changed at the same time. The throttle unit was still under warranty so it went to BMW Reading who tried to rip me off with a few extra bits for a warranty repair on the throttle unit.
Difficult to know for sure if I needed a new ECU or not as the replacement throttle unit may have been faulty but one of those things I guess
Car is running lovely now but hope it might help someone if they get similar symptoms
