Noticed tonight that there is another 'click' once you plant your foot - I never pushed it that hard before. What is it? I assume some sort of kickdown for the auto?

Cars with the automatic 'box have a "kickdown" switch that is activated when you press the throttle to the bottom of its normal travel then past a slight resistance.
It strongly encourages the 'box to change down, but it is really a bit of an anacronism, since the 'box modifies its gearchange patterns in response to other things like speed of throtle pedal movement, and (most dramatically) whether it is in normal or sport mode.

PS: If you "...never pushed it that hard before. ..." then you have not been driving fast enough! Next thing, you'll be telling us you get 30 000 kms out of a set of rear tyres!
