This week's Ski's Z4 Search-related question - how much do heated seats matter?

Tbf, the temperature would be irrelevant as that amount of time would be tinnitus hell for me (thank you RAF).
Yup I have that courtesy of 35+ years of hooning on motorbikes..just turn up the volume!

As my late mum would say; "put the whizzer on to full hot" and all is good in a couple of minutes.

I have had a heated steering wheel in a few cars, but never remembered to put it on. I like the nostalgia of cold arse, cold hands until the 'whizzer' does it's stuff. Happy days! :)

We also live in the UK where it never really gets proper cold. -5c is about the worst it ever really gets. That's not cold!

What’s a whizzer?

When I was 17, me and a mate decided to ride our motorbikes from south Bucks to Bournemouth to visit an old school friend of mine. It was mid-January and the day we chose never got above 0c all day. We didn't think to wear much more clothing than normal, other than our '80s leather jackets and Lee Cooper jeans. No heated grips, or heated clothing in those days.

We stopped for fuel on the way back and the lady in the garage saw how cold we were and made us a cup of coffee; gratis. We were stopped by the Police in a town just 5 miles from home (noisy exhausts). The cops saw how frozen we were and let us go. When I got home I had borderline hypothermia. I had a long, hot bath. I was still freezing. It took three days for my bollox to drop again, I was so cold. I nearly went to the doctor's as it was a serious worry! Never been that cold since, luckily.

Now that was cold. Heated seats.........pah!

Not the coldest I've had, but why I like the seats and wheel with a bit if heat. This was my arrival at work early last month

Back in the 80s I had an old convertible jeep, it was the middle of winter and it was snowing, so me and my mate drove about with the roof off wrapped up in or parkas and gloves etc., brilliant fun... luckily now I have heated seats and a heated steering wheel, they are brilliant!

You've answered your own question, if you didn't use them much in Canada in those harsh winters, then you sure as hell ain't going to bother using them in the shite we get here!!
True but I seem to remember in another thread his plan is to take it back to Canada, so if his wife used them and is likely to use the Z4 there in the winter for an easier life it might be best to find one with heated seats!

My first E86 had them and I did use them now and again because Oregon leather is pretty cold on a chilly day.

For me heated seats in a Z4 are a must. I have a heated steering wheel for the first time ever (now 55) and though not essential, it is very nice on a winters day roof up or down!😎

Heated seats not that essential for me. I'm in the minority, that the main reason I bought my convertible is because it was cheaper than the equivalent coupe. As such, my window for having the roof down is quite small - has to be goldilocks conditions of 15-20 degrees with no expected motorway driving.

Also, its a second car for me, so if its particularly cold out, ill probably use the other car.

So no, not that fussed about heated seats in a z4 really.

I guess I'm in the very small minority here because I've never had them and never missed them. As someone who spends a lot of time outdoors (multi hour bike rides and walks) maybe I've become adapted to colder conditions? Always have the top down on dry days regardless of the season and never felt uncomfortable. Heated steering wheel might be useful though as I don't particularly like driving in gloves. Part of the reason I bought a convertible was to experience the elements so from that perspective heated seats kind of defeat the object for me.

AI suggests there may be some risks for the older cohort in coddling yourself too much:

Research indicates that while passive heat exposure, such as saunas, may have cardiovascular benefits intense or prolonged local heating (like high-setting heated seats) can place significant strain on the cardiovascular system. Heated seats primarily heat the back and thighs, causing blood vessels to dilate (vasodilation) and increasing heart rate as the body attempts to dissipate heat.

Impact on Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
  • Increased Cardiac Strain: Heated seats increase skin temperature, which forces the heart to work harder to maintain core temperature, placing strain on the cardiovascular system.
  • Ischemia Risk: Studies suggest that heat exposure can cause a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand, potentially leading to myocardial ischemia (reduced blood flow to the heart) in individuals with pre-existing coronary artery disease.
  • Blood Pressure Reduction: Similar to other, more systemic heat therapies (like hot tubs), heated seats can cause a temporary drop in blood pressure, which may lead to dizziness in vulnerable individuals.
  • Vulnerability: The cardiovascular risk from heat is particularly high for adults over 65, those with pre-existing heart conditions, and those with poor blood circulation.
