Hi, yes that is exactly where it should be placed and I also agree with you that its only function is to prevent the cover from melting because of the heat dissipated from the exhaust pipes running just above it...yes primarily its fixed with three rivets which by time just snap off, so I used three screws and three nuts to put if back ini place. Glad your job has been finally done!
