Third brakelight

Just noticed a bit missing off the end and a crack in the middle of my boot brakelight - I know these are prone to cracking - BMW quoting £91 to supply and fit. Anyone know how much these are out of interest ? Obviously could save a few quid by fitting it myself but not worth the risk of breaking it or dropping a screw where I can't get it

I changed mine last year, I purchased one from BM think it was about £60, the old one had completely fell apart, it's easy to remove and to fit a new one. But do not over-tighten the screws, they are on springs. Think I over-tightened mine and it's got a small crack already! :(

The new ones come with better springs IIRC, but you shouldn't over tighten them - some say just finger tight. Seems to loose when you do it, but the rubber seal round the back of the light itself moulds and 'sticks'. The clear light unit is cheaper than the red, but whichever you get you should buy it from Sopers Lincoln to get the forum discount

Bought a new clear one last year and fitted it myself. Bloody things cracked and broken already.

I didn't do the nuts up very tight, but maybe not loose enough :(

Red is about £60 and clear one is slightly cheaper Checked prices with Sopers recently before buying a second hand one.
I just didn't tighten my springs up as much when I re-fitted.
Straight forward DIY

Need a deep socket for it to get to it. I torqued it to 15 Nm from memory.

Part of the reason they crack is the springs were too stiff on the early cars. If you are changing the unit spend the few extra pence and replace the springs.
