Thinking of leaving z4 ownership after only 6 months

Well it's been 6 months of love hate with my 07 coupe. It's beautiful and fun to drive. I've done a track day and done everything from shopping runs to 520 mile commutes Bristol to Aberdeen and I'm just not sure it's for me. It's loud, harsh and can't cary much stuff. If I put too much weight in the boot then the sat nav and radio control freezes. The air bag light is on and I've replaced a broken rear spring. On the track the brakes are not capable of cooling themselves even with racing fluid and pads they just get too hot and stop working. There's too much understeer and no LSD. I can't get the seat back far enough to be comfortable on the 8 hour drive to Aberdeen. To cap it all off the car has been stuck on the other side of town since it snowed on Friday. It's parked off street with a small hill one way and tight cobbled street the other and I can't get enough traction to make it out. Before you say it I've been driving rwd bmw's all my life and its not lack of skill that's stopping me getting the car home.
On the other hand I love it's looks. I love the feeling I get when I open the door and slide into the driver seat, the piano black with black sport leather and the auto box with paddles on the wheel. The infectious roar of the straight six when you take it up to the red line. The way the dsc lets you have a bit of fun but not spin and I don't know what else but I do love it. It's just that I hate it as well!
Since its been stuck I've borrowed a mates scooby as he is on holiday and doesn't need it. I've always hated the image of the scooby, it's ugly and basic inside. It's worth a fraction of what my z4 is worth but its just as quick, the turbo charged engine makes just as an infectious noise and the dump valve although childish makes me giggle every time! It can cope with snow and infact is most fun in the snow as it drifts so nicely. It can carry 5 people and as its the estate version a hole host of other stuff.
Yes it's ugly but the ride is much better and it will do anything you ask of it.

It's unthinkable but .....

I really like it.

Maybe enough to get rid of the z4?

If you buy a Subaru people will naturally think you're a moron. They are a car for people whose mother didn't give them enough cuddles and feel a loud exhaust and a matchbox toy exterior will get them the attention they crave.

Stick with the z4. The z4 coupe is the car of a gentleman! :fuelfire:

The Z4coupe has style, prestige,presence,quality & performance in one joyous package BUT i don,t commute in mine & can take on board your review
Is it not feasable to run a daily & keep the Z for weekends ?

Each to their own - but loud? Compared to a scooby? I've removed all foam from my sound generator and the lack of noise is probably my only gripe about my zed! :P

And personally I don't think you'll ever find a two seater sports car with more boot space. Granted there are no rear seats to lower for extra room, but it feels like there's more space in the zed than my previous Focus.

If you do defect to the Subaru camp give Scoobynet a try , they wont laugh cos you owned a BMW :wink:

I think everyone has this feeling with any car after about 6 months. However I think you could resolve most of your issues at a reasonable cost.

Having said that only you can evaluate whether or not the car is right for your needs. I know for a fact my 07 coupe is not the logical option of vehicle for me - its impractical, harsh ride, too large an engine, too expensive to insure, run, service, etc, etc the list goes on and on!

However .. like you I love it and had to have it.

In one sentence you say it's 'loud and harsh' and then say it has an 'infectious roar'
I reckon it sounds right at the right times, so if you are on a boring long commute you feel it's harsh but when going for a hoon sounds good.

There is something of a honeymoon period or rose tinted glasses period with these cars. At first its all love... but then after a while, reality hits and you have to make a decision. Its why so many are low miles, they're not a typical every day car.

Having said that, despite all the issues, hassle and pain I had with my e85, and also with my e89, I still can't find anything else that I want this side of 40 grand. So, while she's like a moody girlfriend, for the moments the mood swings are in the +ve direction, she makes up for it all.

Only you can decide though. I would say, don't judge too quickly. Looking back, for just a few quid, I could have solved all the issues with my e85.. I sold it rather than do that, got into a comfy car and missed the e85 terribly. Now in an e89 I realise my mistakes, which have cost me a good car, plus many many thousands of pounds.

Just sold my roadster and am now in deep depression. :(
Know how you feel Alan - If you weren't so far away from the IOW I would have almost certainly ended up buying your car having sold my roadster. You think its only a car but it gets to you.

If you not happy with the brakes and no LSD, then you should have gone for an M!

Also I have been driving around everywhere in the snow in my M Coupe.

I drove from Southampton to London on Friday where we had a fair amount of snow and back today. There was a lot of snow in London yesterday.

I let the tyre pressures down a bit. Maye the LSD helps in the snow as well, but I was really surprised how well it went! I think with winter tyres it would be very capable!

Do you have RFT? If so, that will ruin the ride. Again an M doesn't have these!

As to the space issue, can't do much about this!

Sell it and buy an M3 <runs for cover>

I owned both for a while (Z4MC and E46 m3) It won't address all your issues but does cover the following:

* Amount of space to carry stuff
* has LSD
* Loads of room to put the seat back
* You can get 5 people in it
* The seats are softer
* better brakes

In addition it'll be faster than your Z4. The main difference between the Z4MC and the M3 was the M3 felt a lot more 'cosy' inside, the Z4 felt a lot more sporty, ride was a lot more firm etc.

Glad you managed to get there and back :thumbsup:

SMG and lack of LSD is 2 huge downsides if you track the car.... You shouldnt be boiling the brakes on a track,unless you seriously working the car ..

Answer to all above....

Buy the M version.....
