Hi all,
I’ve got a BMW 3 Series (F30, 80,000 miles). I recently noticed a metallic rattling noise when starting the engine from cold. This lasts for about 30–40 seconds and then mostly goes away once the engine is warm. There are no warning lights, the power feels normal and the oil level is fine.
It sounds like the noise is coming from the engine rather than the belts. I’m a bit worried about the timing chain VANOS.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is it safe to drive, or should I go straight to a specialist?
