The Smoothest Way to drive a Z4M

Hi,

I've had a Z4MC for about two months and there has been many threads on the Z4M's harsh ride and the wonderful CDV.

When you're not in the mood for a fang or if the wife is in the car, what have you found to be the smoothest way to drive the car?

Strangely enough, I found the only way to get rid of the harsh ride feel is to drive really fast all the time, but that's not what his thread is about! :P

My experience is drive it literally at crawling pace, change from first to second at 1,500 (CDV is still a pain), but I'm still not happy since this is too slow compared to other cars at traffic light.

Any suggestions?

Unfortunately for me, Montréal is pothole heaven so there is no way I can get a truly smooth ride. I have to go to Ontario or New England to enjoy nice pavement. As for the gear shifts I found myself too that shifting around 2K rpms is the smoothest although this is boring. I also found that any passenger will always complain about anything in the car so I don't really care anymore. Of course, it's a bit more touchy with SO. :(

Ovrkll will probably agree with me that first gear is the biggest issue. He taught me to start out in second gear and I've since discovered that if you shift to third at 2500rpms that seems to be pretty smooth... oh, and go easy on the gas I think goes without saying.

moi aussi je trouve que la meilleure facon pour que ca porte smooth est de rouler vite. quand je suis avec blonde et roule en pépere, c'est la que ca porte dure.

i got the first bit, but not the end.. i think you're saying:

you're also looking for a way to drive it smooth, you think it's smoother faster, it's only when you drive it slow that its hard ?

please correct me .. whats pepere ? :)

When did you guys both get M's? All kidding aside - in the M the smoothest way to drive the car is to shift between 3,500 & 4,500 RPM.

Ovrkll has an //M. I have an SI. They shift about the same jittery way as all of the models of the Z4 do.

I agree, 3500 to 4500 seems to be pretty smooth too. I think it is the 2500 to 3500 range that is a little jittery. I'll have to do some experimenting tomorrow :driving:

Loose Interpretation: Drive fast...put away wet!
Exact Interpretation: I also find that the best way to roll smooth is to roll fast. When I'm with my girlfriend and drive like a oldtimer, that's when the ride is stiff.

Personally, when I want a smooth ride relaxing ride, I drive the truck!

I've been driving a TT today and its such a difference, featherlight steering / gear change / clutch but still nice and quick. Shows up how heavy the Z4M is in traffic and at low speeds. Wouldn't swap in a million years but have to admit the TT is easier through West London...!

It can be hard work in slow traffic,

I found the following

the revs drop quickly when you go to change gear, give it more throttle than you are doing between the gears. It's not a problem when you go for a fast change, but when pottering unless you match revs better, the cars a bit jerky.
Also throttle is a bit keen in 1st, remap is meant to sort this out.

Afraid I can't help you with any advice or recommendations - after about 1 yr of ownership I had to give up and trade into a Merc SL55 with old mans auto and steering wheel buttons! :D

I think the option of the SMG on the new Z4 should vastly improve the car, and cure what has I'm sure been a big issue for a lot of owners, and probably put off a few potential owners. Interior all looks much better too on the new car, but 4 months into SL55 ownership I have to say I'm very very pleased, and don't think I will be tempted out of the Merc for a while.
