The Great Scottish Run - 2014

Hi All,

Not been on much lately, lots going on right now, and so not much time available for the forum.

I come here with my begging bowl out. I'm doing a charity run in October - a half marathon. I'm shamelessly trying to raise as much money as I can. Why? Well, where do I start.

Earlier this year I had a little health scare. Ended up with a short stay in Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. Hadn't been feeling right for a long time, had lost 2 stone in weight, and generally wasn't in good shape.

Anyhoo, spent an evening in A&E, and after 7 hours waiting around - the doc confirmed I had blood sugar levels of 28 mmol/l (normal range is between 4-7) and ketone levels at 3.6 mmol/l (anything over 3 has dangerous implications). The doc couldn't believe I had been going to work - and said I was staying in overnight as I was at risk of slipping into a coma :!: . Ho hum.

Diagnosis? Late onset Type 1 Diabetes. Bar stewards :x Since then I've been adjusting to my new regime. 4 injections a day, regular testing of my blood sugar levels, diet adjustment - and I need to look after myself. Seriously.

So, determined to stick the proverbial 2 fingers up at my new condition - I've taken up running. This is hazardous to my health in some ways, as my medication plays havoc with my blood sugar levels whilst exercising. Typically my blood sugar levels drop very fast whilst I'm out running, and if I don't scoff plenty of carbs whilst out on the road, it would result in a quick trip back to hospital. I mostly combat the effects of my medication by eating Jelly Babies and drinking carb gels (wierd right? But they work  ).

I've been hammering the tarmac lately, and have my 5 kilometer time down to 20m 35s, and 10k down to 45m 15s.

I'm on a strict training plan for the Great Scottish Run on 5th October. It's a half marathon, and I'm aiming for 1hr 35m. I've also got a 10k run at Loch Ness the weekend before, hoping to set a new personal best. Will also be entering a marathon next year, with an aim to run it in less than 3hrs 40m

Back to the begging bowl bit - here's my fundraiser page https://www.justgiving.com/adam-shanks1

Any donations would be gratefully received

Best,

Adam

I love jelly babies.

I'll sort out a donation in due course - the just giving page is doing weird things on my phone though... What charity are you running for ?

Well it's good to hear from you Adamski and there has been some concern on the Forum. Steph and I were only talking about you last week - so thanks for posting up.

Good to hear you've got this controlled and are aware of the extra challenge and demand of your training - sounds like you've had a tough time of it though so don't be too bloody minded and take care!

Don't want to encourage you to overdo it but of course we'll donate after such a back story! :o

Like you, I can understand the compulsion to 'put two fingers up to it' but just don't make things worse that's all - adapt and survive! 8)

Hope to catch up (not in a running sense :D more on the road on a hoon) with you soon.

Paul and Steph

:driving:

Well done Adam - happy to chip in but for some reason I can't get to the justgiving page - I'm getting an "Access denied" message - is it just me ? I've used justgiving many times and I'm accessing from my business laptop ?

Donation - will be sorted soon - glad you are getting on top of this  - i thought you had taken it up to get some fresh air now you are a coupe owner .

Not sure if you'll be able to see this, or whether you need to be a Strava member to see it.
