The end is nigh.... but I ain't leaving here

For 8 years I've been a grin wearing Z4MR fanboy. I've come here for help and have always received a generous amount of warmth and priceless knowledge when ever I've asked and it's always felt special being part of select fearless group of enthusiasts.

This weekend Serendipity goes to a new home and I welcome a new car (well new top me) to our humble fleet. It's been utterly brilliant having the Zed. I've made some firm friends and have some memories that will never leave me (never let a bus pass you while you're hood and windows down! Cough!) but it's been the warmth of fellow owners M \ non M alike and few cars get a thumbs up by total strangers like the Zed.

So I'm making the jump to a M2C, to be honest it's the only thing we test drove that felt genuinely exciting to drive. Cayman S? Meh plus I couldn't get over feeling fleeced for 4 cylinders (Painted wing mirrors Sir? Of course, very tasteful. Painted lamp washer covers Sir? Indeed, a wise choice. Swiftly followed by "How muich?!!!"), don't get me started.

And the M2C in contrast was sensible money for the performance on offer. I like the squat stance (Hey I loved and owned a Corrado...)

So I'm getting an Ex demonstrator, the part ex was reasonable all things considered, the miles <700 and it has all the toys I want and none that I don't (eat me, Apple).

I'll be back to share my thoughts.

It won't be a visceral as the Zed, nor as engaging (SWMBO wanted DCT) but I hope on the right day it will give me half as much fun.

Still seems awfully right that I wanted an M3 but got the Zed with the S54 and have gone for an M2C with the S55.

Serendipity, adieu...

Great looking car, hope it serves you well, let us know your thoughts once you’ve put some miles on the new beast

I hope you enjoy your M2C OP.

It'll be interesting to read your thoughts once you've had it a while.

Fabulous! I’d love an M2 C. They just look fantastic and are the whole package in terms of an ///M car. You must be very pleased. Lots of pics please. :D

Love it. Many happy ///Miles! Like the others, I’m really keen to know what you think after a few hundred miles, as I’d always consider purchasing one as well.

It kind of seems like a natural progression from a cost \ performance standpoint.

We did try a couple of Porsche Cayman's, a regular and an S. To be honest even SWMBO found the regular Cayman underwhelming. The S was much better but it also felt like to get the equivalent "ferocity" of the Z4M you had to spend more cash. So it would have to be a Cayman S with PDK and sports chrono to make it feel worth while. The other thing is the sheer greed of Porsche on options (painted wing mirrors? Kerching! Electric seats? Kerching!).

So to get a half decent one you're looking around 60k - 65k

Being a pretty good example. I don't like the colour mind.

The test drive went well on the M2C and it is plenty quick enough and in my mind not that far off the handling on the 718 (obviously the 718 is sweeter handling and better riding than an M2C but the 718 engine is un . So it was just a matter of finding one with the right spec. SWMBO will always have preferred the 718 S / GTS but there's no escaping the 15K price difference.

The only other option was go the other way and go Alpine A110 but as glorious as it is I don't the Mrs would have got on with it.

And the M2 Comp has made her where home.

Initial impressions are she's a very different beast to the Zed! I'm still running it in so I won't be able to really open her up for a few weeks but 1st thoughts....

It's quite discrete considering the performance on offer and unless you're an enthusiast I think you'd miss it. The colour helps it keep a low profile. Driving, well the journey back from Bath went in no time, it was pretty comfy compared to the Zed and when you're not in the mood apart from the exhaust burble you'd never know it was 410 bhp. Which is a nice.

Felt very strange looking out and not seeing the Zed on the drive. Very happy with the M2C and look forward to learning more about it's performance envelope over the coming months.

Will get her washed and waxed ready for winter tomorrow.

Cheers!

In 2016 I bought a "manual" M2 with the same reason as you described. Then in 2018 after owning my Z4M + M2 together for two years I sold my Z4M after 8 years of ownership and kept my M2 (daily + fun + track).

As a sidenote; my girlfriend also used my Z4M....but when she ordered a Alpine A110 there was almost no reason anymore to keep my Z4M. It's gone but not forgotten and the only car that can really replace the Z4M in every aspect for me is a 981 GT4 :)

I'd agree with that, pretty much the only thing that that could be as like for like replacement with a Z4M would be a 981 GT4. They ain't cheap though.

Loving the M2C and can't wait to get the RIS complete (Friday!)

Initially felt like I was sitting on top of the car as the seats feel pretty high. But they are pretty comfy

I wanted manual seats in my M2 (same as in my Z4M) so that the seating position was a low as possible with oem seats. Indeed you do sit higher and initially I also felt sitting on top of the car...but in time you get used to this. For support on street, track and longer journeys the M2 seats are way better then the Z4M seats.

Agreed. Post RIS the M2 is effortlessly ballistic! only had one opportunity to open her up but the Audi TT was left pretty much for dead.

I'm hoping that as the engine loosens up the economy improves as it feels worse than the Zed! not helped by a tiny tank.
