"Thank you for using DVLA’s online service to confirm you are no longer the registered keeper of this vehicle.
DVLA will automatically issue a refund for any full remaining months for vehicle tax and cancel any direct debits. The refund will be sent to the address on the V5C log book, which was used"

Yesterday;
"Your bank has told us to cancel your Direct Debit instruction as your bank or building society has cancelled your mandate.
As we have not been able to collect payment we have now cancelled your direct debit mandate.
What next?
The registered keeper must now take one of the following actions. Failure to do this may result in a penalty."

Lesson - Don't trust the DVLA to cancel your direct debits

yes a clear case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing

Interesting, how many of forum members pay monthly by DD and how many pay annually

Annually for me and the wife - changed her car on the 19th of this month - any idea how long it takes to receive the refund (V5 sent by post, not web site)

I switched to DD when they sacked all their employees and went digital etc so I could be in charge. Once I sell my car I cancel my direct debit and don't have to spend months arguing with some moron as to what I do and don't owe them

Cheers Taz, hopefully early next week then :)

Annually and not direct debit annually.
Dont like anybody having control over when they want to take money from my account.

Ah, but you know what step 2 will be that non DD payments will incur a penalty ...

Happy to pay the penalty then.
For a while we pulled out of the direct debit scheme with our gas/electricity provider and paid via standing order instead.
No way is someone just deciding to up a direct debit by £20 or £30 when they feel like it.
Yes we probably paid more by not getting discounts but we paid what we wanted to when we wanted to.

I know what you mean, it is a nightmare to reconcile my business account.

Sold our X5 on 17th August.
Buyer taxed it on the phone before he drove off.
Had confirmation from DVLA that the changes had been made, about a week later.
DVLA took DDr for the X5 on 2nd September.
Still waiting for the refund.
Moral: Cancel your DDr.

Just as an aside we bought a Range Rover on 21st August and set up the monthly DDr there and then. SORN'd the car from 31st August, which had to be done manually as we hadn't got the V5 back. DVLA took tax for August (fine) and September (SORN'd) on 2nd September.

So I've paid 1 months tax for a car I don't own. 1 months tax for a car I've owned and had on the road for 10 days and 1 months tax for a car which is SORN'd. Can't be right, Shirley.

It really does sound a bit of a mess. The system seems so easy and streamlined on paper, yet they have turned it into a behemoth.

And yet all it needs to do is ensure you have taxed your car. It really should be quite simple.

I reckon I could knock up a system for a couple of grand.

I'm sure the dvla have paid millionS for the shite system they have!

They are a law unto themselves. I sold my Toyota Supra in March, the V5 and details of the new owner were with them within a week. The car was going to a buyer in Jersey and I agreed to have it delivered to a mechanic in Whitchurch. The tax on the car had elapsed at the end of Feb so to deliver the car to the agreed garage I had to back tax it and then drive 60 miles, cancel the tax and we were done. Easy eh?.

To keep things simple I paid for 6 months tax on line as I didn't want to be messing about with DD's and the bank etc. Considering I was only taxing the car for 2 hours and covering the whole of March, I would obviously get back 5 months as a refund. Long story short, I made telephone calls chasing the refund every 2 weeks from April to mid May. DVLA confirmed they had all the documents and I would get a full 5 month refund. Chased again in the 13th May and suddenly they don't have any details of the V5 and I have to write to them with all the details. :x

I sent a detailed letter giving dates and times etc. I chased by phone every 2 weeks till the end of June and I am still being told I will get a full refund but it will be 2 weeks (the 2 week rule was used in every call to them). Suddenly in the first week in July I get a letter saying that I am only getting 3 months worth of refund as I only notified them in May. I have now written a series of letters going through their complaints procedure and even up to the Chief Executives office. It is like banging your head against a brick wall.

They have obviously lost the paperwork and will not take your word for anything. Even though the telephone calls are recorded, they only go back 90 days so all the info I was given is now conveniently lost. Even in the recent calls where I was lied to, they claim the staff made a mistake and have been advised with training etc. The date that I wrote to them is treated as the sale date now and I am £50 out of pocket.

Lesson learned. Even if you return the V5, send a letter, recorded delivery and get names of the people you spoke to. Also log when you called. They are a complete was of time and just want the money.

Alternatively set up the direct debit and then cancel it once the first payment is made.

I'm fairly confident I will have a trail of bullshit to follow - but the plonkers won't have my money ;).

If they f**k up the DD you get your money back from the bank and the bank can deal with the Swansea dickheads

Oh - and yesterday I got an email saying my reply to the plonkers couldn't be delivered.

It's almost as funny as the new webshite for sorting out your personl plates - you know - the webshite that is only "open" between 08:00 and 18:00 Mon-Sat - You couldn't make it up :headbang:

Unfortunately direct debits usually need to be cancelled by the company around 5 to 7 working days before it's due. They start the process of claiming the direct debit through the banking channels so that on the date it's due to be taken or next available working day after if it falls on a bank holiday or weekend.

So expecting them to cancel a direct debit within 5 days, given the timing of your post 2 of these are not 'working' days so there has been insufficient time so far to do that.

However it should be made clear that if within this time it still may collect and you should also cancel it with your bank, especially if it's within close proximity to collection.

Whenever I cancel a direct debit or close an account where DDs were being paid, I also cancel at the bank. Just saves any hassle. A lot of companies will tell customers to also do that. Plus its tidier when you go look at your bank account to see who you have Direct Debits set up for.

I set my Direct Debit to pay the DVLA yearly, great I don't need to faff about next year online renewing and they took the money on the 1st of September unlike paying online where they 'reserve' the money from your account instantly and take it a day or two later. At least this way they don't have my money for weeks before. Doubtful they will take any more money from my account until next year and if they do, that's what the Direct Debit Indemity is for. You call the bank, they rerun the money to your account and they chase up the company that took it to get it back. Simples.
