So following on from a thread about the cars you are glad you didn't buy, what about the ones that got away?

One I remember from back in the 70s when the Sweeney was on TV was a Granada 3.0 litre XL manual - just like the Consul GT Reagan and Carter chased old Jags in!

That Granny drove well and handled really well (for the era, at least) unlike the Rover P6 3500S I bought instead that handled like a Boaty Mcboatface  - but when you are only 20 a V8 trumps a V6!

The Alfa Romeo Duetto. Found once a piece in mint condition. Was saving money for another reason back then... Still love this car :driving:

The one that got away was a '72 911 2.4S in 1984 when I was 19, it was an AFN mechanics car with 85K on in Yellow with a Ducktail for £5250, I bought a 1981 924 Lux instead for £5.5K

The 2 cars I wish I'd bought, both around 2008/2009, one was a '95 BMW e36 M3 GT 1/50, and the other was a Porsche 968 sport with the 911 seats, both around 9k, and both at least double that now if not more.

Ferrari 308GT4 at a classic car auction at Brooklands about 3 years ago, mint low mileage car went for £16k, worth a hell of a lot more now :headbang:

When I was looking at Z4s, l briefly tinkered with the idea of buying a Z3 bread van. Loved the two tone interior. I would not have been able to enjoy putting miles on it, as much as the Z4 t.hough. :driving: :D

I had a Stag back in the 80's, loved it and the sound track was heaven, a mate offered a straight swap for a Jag E type coupe, a bit ratty and not as clean as the Stag, so I declined. Also had the same offer for a mint Escort MK2 RS2000, I liked the Stag to much.

Back in the '80s, I part-exed my Corvette for Renault 5 Turbo 2.

A minor fault on the R5 got me worried so I 'undid' the deal and got the Corvette back.

Idiot. :headbang:

Other than that, I wish I had actually bought just about every car I have nearly bought over the years...

Alfa Montreal, Lamborghini Jarama S, Lancia B24R (yes, R!), Lancia 037, Iso Lele and loads more...

...all were for peanuts at the time.

Oh well. :D :D

306 Rallye .. Bought the XSi instead but always hankered after a Rallye in either 106 or 306 form.

As above with the Z3 breadvan.
And when I was looking for a new car 3 years ago, there was a nice 996Turbo up for 24999. Nice colour scheme and it is likely to be worth more today. I got scared off by the internet rumour mill and figured I'd run an M car before and the bills would be a lot more manageable.

When I bought my Z3///MR in 2007 from Hexagon they had a Z8 for £50k and that's what I wish I'd bought. Not only is it a beautiful car its worth 3 times that now ! :headbang:

Any of the GT3s I looked at a few years back and especially my mates 996 & 997 RS one priced under £50k the other under £75k :headbang:

The black 996 GT3 with 22k miles which I was offered at £32k.... would have been cheap motoring.

Not quite as exotic as some on here for me it was a MK2 MR2 GT T-Bar back in 2008 it was one the last made on V plate in silver with the black metalic detail. The car had really low miles around 12k if I remember correctly. It was absolutely stunning and as an MR2 fan was my perfect model colour combination and spec.

I was on my placement year at uni and without almost financially destroying myself at the time I just couldn't really make the numbers work to buy it. My Dad offered to help me out so I could get it but I declined.

Probably for the best I didn't get it but I still think of it as the one that got away.

A BMW E32 750iL. It was an ex-embassy car that had only done about 40K. Very well specced, very good condition. Black, with holes in the front bumpers for the flags, and big blobs of glue on the front doors where the crests had been removed. On sale for a few thousand Euros.

SNAP! Around 1986 a local garage had a well known local doctor's 1970's 911t in silver, he'd had it from new and it was a well cared for example up for the price of a new base fiesta, I was torn but bought a newish GTV6 because I thought it was going to be more practical and reliable :wkr:

Didn't quite work out like that, the Alfa was trouble and a long gone pile of rust, and the the 911 ......... well :headbang:

I had the chance to buy a mates Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF Lusso that had a Terry Wogan on the log book and my Dad wouldn't lend me the money... it was lovely and went like something off a shiny shovel. .130 BHP ..we had 120 out if it on the M1 once
