Test drive insurance...struggling

Hi, I'm looking to test drive a Z4M Roadster, but can't find insurance for the day. The annual quotes haven't been so bad, but nobody will touch this car on a one-day basis.

How has anyone else managed this? Who have you used?

Many thanks!

Have you asked your current insurer if they'll extend cover for test drive. Some will, some won't.

Unfortunately my current insurer won't touch me in a Z4M (I'm 25, currently in a Z3MC, so am not sure why) so I'm having to start afresh. :(

I could not insure a 1.2 Clio on a one off single day cover basis. They wouldn't do it on the grounds that the car wasn't mine (hence they couldn't insure me for the loss).

Crazy....

I am sure there will be specialists who will do it

Are you not covered third-party on other cars on your existing insurance? Of course if you bend the car on the test drive the owner will insist on your paying up, but if you're considering buying it then presumably you already have enough money.

When I was test driving old nails last year I checked my policy and found I wasn't covered for third party. Phoned insurance company who said it was because I owned a convertible. Where's the logic. They then did add foc.

As a owner though would you be happy with a test driver with only third party insurance?

On the basis that "if you break, you buy" and they'd showed me the readies... yes
If you're not prepared to accept the pain and risk of selling privately, there's always the option of trading it in at a dealer for several k less. It's a matter of balancing risk and reward.

All good points, many thanks for the responses. I do have 2 options now, one of which is free 7 days' through HPI - I'm waiting to see if there are any restrictions that preclude my using it though!

Sounds like your best bet

Check the HPI insurance eligibility, when I got a HPI report recently I think it said you got 7 days insurance if you bought the car, not before.

Good luck...

Please check this! Although I'm happy to take you out for a drive if you're happy being a passenger if you cant get insurance.

If you are pretty certain about the car and ready to buy it assuming test drive ok then you can arrange insurance to start that day with whichever company has quoted you best. I'm fairly sure that all policies have to have a penalty free cancellation option within the first 48hrs-1week ("cooling off period"), so if your not happy you could then cancel your policy.

Check the small print but might be a feasible option if you are otherwise stuck?

I'm having the same problem at the moment. Isn't the issue with the latter that you can't have two insurance policies on the same car, or is the idea that in the event you have to claim then the seller cancels their insurance policy, you buy the car, and then make a claim on your policy?
