Tempted... My first love...

After owning a Citroen Visa at 17 that I could not drive, never mind start, my first proper car was a 1982 Ford Fiesta 1.1. Loved that car until I had higher aspirations, and income.

Tempted by this as a practical runabout;

The engine orientation is wrong... Mk 2 Escort would allow you to use your hard earned driving skills :)

Nah, you're getting this all wrong, this is my first proper car, and its a reflection thing. Besides, there's nothing like an old fiesta to rev up and let out the clutch before moving one foot per second with wheels hopping and screeching... ah back in the day...

Having owned a light green/beige Cavalier as my first vehicle, I try my best to forget that period of my life. I did have an MG maestro though, which was the worlds most environmentally friendly car.... It magically recycled itself through spontaneous corrosion. The only saving grace were the red seat belts.

The Fiesta looks perfect, and is most likely a good investment if cared for.

Go for it

I think the beauty of these is that they're just so simple, no fancy electricals or suspension etc. All just simple stuff that you can take apart with a screwdriver, spanner or hammer, fix, pop it back together and off you go. No run flats, no electric window fails, no frameless iced up doors, nothing costs more than a few quid to replace, etc. Simplicity is something modern car makers need to look back at IMHO.

Perry, you are so wrong. A few month back I reclaimed my youth by buying the car that started it all for me, a 1990 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTi. If anything it's harder getting into the BMW to drive as it's so numb and lifeless by comparison.

There is however 1 very big problem with this thread. The thinking that a car of this era could possibly be a practical runabout. Yes, they are easier to fix but they WILL breakdown more. I've spent more time working on my 205 than I have driving it so far. However, I bought it as a hobby so it's serving it's purpose.

Mine was a white 1981 1.1l Mk I Fiesta with a grill that the previous owner had painted white. I loved it right up to the moment that I cut my hand climbing from the overturned wreck on a country lane....

If you can find one I would go for the MK1 XR2 now that was a cracking motor, mate had one and scared me half to death doing a ton over along the A5, they were quite nippy had lovely direct steering :)

We had a Fiesta Supersport brand new in 1980 - It looked the part then but would I have one now? I think I would rather have typhoid!

I paid £4911 for it, (probably a years salary or more back then) and in the first two years and only 20k miles it needed:- New strut, Carb, Clutch and a complete re-spray and to cap it all the centre main bearing went!

The steering was heavy, the clutch control lousy and the rust had already started to creep into the bodywork and at the same time I replaced both headlight units. Then at three years old, it was stolen - probably with a couple of yobs with a bent coat hanger!

That was my first and last new Ford.

Maniac, a plea, If you think your E89 has given you some grief, please throw your rose tinted specs in the bin at your first opportunity and thus preserve your sanity!

Cue the "my first car" post

what i really wanted was a 1600 Rs mexico or i would have settled for a 1300 Harrier but budget wouldn't stretch  story of my life

I had a '74 RS2000 way back in '78. and I've had countless other cars in the past that I wish I had now - Only for their cash value tho!

I've owned and played with classics for 25 years and so wish Id kept some of them! Talking of this Fiesta I can't see you going wrong with it - have you seen what's happened to Escort MK1 and MK2 prices! anything that's survived in clean original condition is fetching silly money, I see the MK1 Fiesta possibly going the same way in the next few years, so buy it, keep it nice and have some fun in the knowledge that spending a few quid on it probably isn't money down the drain

£7k boggo MK2 Escort http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C414548

oh wow... my first car was an ex police c reg white ford fiesta popular plus 1.1

but it didn't handle very well. esp in the wet.

I wouldn't go back myself.

That mk 2 escort was my second car in yellow in 1.3 guise

Handled much better and the rear wheels were driven.

Not everyone's first car is their first love :poke: I shared a mini 850 1964. It would overheat after 6 miles and then have to cool off for over 2 hours. Moved onto a triumph......... Acclaim :headbang: what a pile of muck. Moved onto an Austin montego. :headbang: :headbang: . Got significantly better from then on but from such a low base nowhere really to go but up. But if it floats your boat buy back your first car I for one won't be ever !!!

Excellent condition original paintwork, one careful lady driver garaged since new. 25400 genuine miles verified by service and MOT records. 12 months MOT. This has been in the family since new. We have original service book, car handbook and sale invoice.

Looks great, but I would be wary of buying anything from a lady that lives in a garage.
