Yes, as explained by RobbiZ4 on P1 of this thread:

I would not expect "flames". The motor simply continues turning around as intended. But it gets hotter and hotter until internal(!) plastic parts will get overheated and melt away. Then the rotating unit will stop, cool down and is destroyed.

Yep, in Robbie own words the pump has been burned. I knew I’d read it somewhere.

It does look as though Robbi is suggesting the motor would get extremely hot and melt itself, rather than burst into flames, at which point perhaps the circuit would be destroyed and nothing further would occur? Not sure, I'm no expert on electrickery at all.
However, I do think Rob has a point too. Whilst the motor may not burn, the heat generated by it could conceivably be enough to set fire to insulation etc.
Regardless of whether it melts or burns, I would not want something reaching that temperature in the boot of my car.
Following Robbi's suggestion of disconnecting it would seem wise to me.

I worked with DC motors & electro/hydraulic motors for the best part of 20years, my experience also includes fault finding on relay interlocking circuitry. Prior to that i installed & commissioned battery backup systems for the National telephone network.
I’m not sure what you bring to the table apart from a penchant for sarky comments? Maybe you could enlighten us as to your technical prowess?

Anything electrical has potential for catching fire. I have used a fire extinguisher 4 times on electrical equipment to put fire out.

The subject being discussed is the fact that (according to you), the pumps can burst into flames, if a fault lets them run continuously:

they can burst into flames!

This has been refuted by other posters, speaking from their experience. You attempted to justify your claim by spuriously quoting RobbiZ4 who actually said nothing of the sort. Overheating and melting of internal pump components is not "they can burst into flames!".

Only a fool could see those pictures & not realise that could easily lead to a fire, I’m responding to your rudeness in terms you’re likely to understand - if someone’s been rude to me i don’t tend to be polite back to them,

My final (hopefully) update on this particular thread.

(The short version of the story)

Car booked into Chandlers BMW Worthing whose report(s) confirmed no signs of water ingress in the boot which I assume could have been a contributory factor to my problems. They initially replaced the following:

Hall Sensor 54377224679
Microswitch 54377227398

After that they also found that they also needed to replace:

Microswitch 54377228586
Electrical connector 61132359999

Several hundred pounds later the roof now works without throwing any errors on the dashboard.
