1. Banana
2. Dresser
3. Grammar
4. Potato
5. Revive
6. Uneven
7. Assess

Are you peeking or have you already given up?

Give it another try.... Look at each word carefully.

No, it is not that they all have at least 2 double letters.... Answer is below!

Answer: In all of the words listed, if you take the first letter, place it at the end of the word, and then spell the word backwards, it will be the same word.

Yeh, Sussed that in a few seconds. Easy :)

If you found that easy then find the solution to this 11+ question from 1957 - the exam board said there was only one answer they would accept - remember you are an 11 year old child in 1957.

Which is the odd one out - and give your reason:-
Cat. Dog Radio Car

I sussed it before I looked at the answer. Pointless otherwise

Come on then - see if you can get the answer to the question given to an 11yr old kid in 1957 .

Let me guess in 1957 did you need a license for a radio? You would for a car and you would for a dog so Cat is possibly the odd one out as I've never heard of a cat license

You've Sussed that !
What about :-

Steamer courage Measles Leave

Only on answer the exam board would accept.

Is it that you can put nationalities before each of them expect from steamer? So Dutch courage, German measles and I believe it's French leave

But I could be completely wrong. Just Dutch and German sprang to mind.

You must have been in the same lecture theatre as me !!

Great minds, Ron.

They would be pretty tricky to some 11 year olds. Today they'd be like what is this? I'm just trying to stop myself from being completely bored as he's still sleeping.

It's not surprising so many kids failed the 11+ exam.
The lecturer impressed on us that although there are several correct answers that could be given to those questions, the exam board said only one (the answers you gave ) could be accepted as correct.

There was about 30 of us in the room aged 40 to 55 at the time and the answers had to be dragged out of us.
Our children, candidates for the university and the education course were no help!

Crikey - that's me failed the 11+then - thought it was radio because it had 5 letters - doh :P

Oh don't worry, there were loads of "correct " answers given but the lecturer said that the exam board in their infinite wisdom at the time, would only accept their single correct answer.

It's worth remembering that it was eleven year old children doing this and not mature adults!

And by that decision close off a future for many capable, individual and free thinking youngsters - kind of explains the social revolution of the 60s

Although I failed my 11+ way back then - I look back at us bunch of Secodary Modern "failures" and see many of us have done quite well thro our lives.

On the flip side of that statement, I see some who achieved their parents goal of Grammar school education yet have done nothing noteworthy!
