TDI Tuning Remap

Hi,

Thinking of remapping my 2.8i to get up to 298BHP.
Heard TDI tuning were very good and looks ideal with 7 setting for economy up to performance settings.
Has anyone else tried these guys and any good?

You can get a proper ECU tune for the 28i, no need for a piggyback.

Piggyback units are always a last resort for tuning vehicles with a locked ECU.

OK, interesting. Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks!

These guys are experienced with remapping BMW’s along with Celtic and several others. It’s best to use a company that’s not a fly by night

Ps, it’s not a 2.8i but a 28i, it’s actually a 2.0 litre engine

Thanks Snartbear.
I will give these a lookup and yes meant 28i!!
Thinking if the old BMW badging system there..

The N20 engine that powers the 18i 20i 28i E89 variants is very similar in all its variants...it’s interesting to see the TDi box claimed which are largely in line with what you would expect from a piggy back box.

Unlike a remap which as it’s name implies loads a multi dimensional map of acceptable values for different throttle/map/turbo/gear/fuel/other settings and for an engine like the N20’s can make all the versions close to the same outputs, the piggy back box , ‘fools’ the ECU into thinking some of the input parameters are different to heat they actually are...

The advantage is that the box can be removed / transferred...

The prime disadvantage that the box cannot by its very nature of being off board do as good a job as proper re-map..

You can see that with the TDi box on the 18i and 20i versions the max uplift is a lot less than a re-map...

However on your 28i the uplift , because you already start at a higher point takes you to the same point or even higher than the re-map.

My concern ignoring the semi religious tones of right n wrong is that they are pushing the engine into the upper limits of what most tuners consider safe for this engine....

Given that a tuning box can never exert the same degree of control over the engine as a good re-map by nature of its restricted subset of sensors it can read / simulate in this case I would urge caution simply because these guys are pushing the engine into areas where other tuners could have gone but have chosen not to...

The N20 can be a great engine but it cannot be thermodynamically pushed as a hard as the N54 can be , there are a wide variety of coolers and other goodies to keep the 3.0 N54 engine together ..

So as SmartBear suggests Evolve/Celtic and some others are the ‘safer’ option..,

Is a good USA guide to the why and wherefores they use a piggy back tuner but use larger Intercooler, cat less downpipes and ethanol to get to 350bhp..on the E89 N20 in UK there are no FMICs and ethanol isn’t an option..

Is a good basic source of views..

So lots of clean oil regularly...new cam chain post 50k miles if pre 2015 MY and less than 300bhp tune and you should be ok—ish..

Thanks for all the opinions.
Will take time to consider as although 2016 model it has just clocked up 50k. I will only put 6k miles a year on her but want to keep the engine protected. Love this forum guys!
