I was in a very similar situation when I picked up my Z last month. Anyway, in the end it was easily resolved - I chose my insurer online and then rang them up (Admiral) to buy, on the condition they could email me the certificate immediately. They did so and I forwarded it to the BMW dealership who used it to sort my tax
