Tappy on first start up

1 step at a time

Normally I would agree, but what you have suggested won't work. I speak from experience and researched this issue extensively when I had the problem back in 2009.

lol I have 25 yrs as a mechanic ... Oil change works 50 % of the time and tappet replacement 99% ..... The issue you point towards didn't affect all but certainly some . So maybe 1 step at a time eh . And if it's made it that far in life he has a good chance :)

srhutch you had a non-m? :o

OP id have a chat with Your local trusted indy maybe. bmw specialist tho. it doesn't sound great but not terrible. where are you based? maybe people can suggest someone.

I did an oil change yesterday with 5w30 oil and this morning when I started it up it was tapping for a lot long after, wasn't until I started to drive off it then stopped?

Did you take it and rev the life out of it for a fair few miles ? Sometimes for old ones to fill takes a bit of persuading . What mileage is on car ..... Next up will be replacement .

No before the oil change it would do it for like 2 seconds then go, after oil change it would take longer to stop tapping from a cold start

Sounds normal to me, unless it doesn't go away after an italian tune up. Mine will end long journeys without any tapping and the start again if it hasn't been driven for a little while.

Yes I no but what I'm saying is since my oil change its doing it for longer now

0/40 or 5/30 it's just ambient temp range .... The 5/30 will be slightly heavier so once it gets into tappet it may not drain of so quick . Let us know what happens after a good drive .

Just started the z4 after its been sat there all day as iv been a work and only did it for about 2 seconds which is normal for my z4, hopefully a good drive sorted it

I'm pretty sure the horror stories about replacement cylinder heads etc are the N52 (SI) engines so I wouldn't be too concerned, just drive and enjoy it :driving:
