Tappety ??

Just recently I have noticed that occasionally on a cold start there is a definite tappety sound that lasts 3 or 4 seconds maybe before going away. Sounds sort of like a hydraulic tappet that builds pressure up and "clears" itself IYSWIM

I can't think what this is. Any thoughts?

Probably vanos ...

No hydraulic tappet on S54..

I would get someone to lift off the cam cover and just check for cam/ follower wear..

Yep, oil level is fine.
It's in for an oil service Tuesday I wanted to get an idea before talking to the garage :-)

And it has an interim change so it's only done 7000 or so on this oil.

The oil may sort it, 7000 is quite a long time on oil.

Really? In the book IIRC it's something like 14,000 between changes??
I keep mine to the 7000 mile or so oil changes - mines now on 140k miles (117k in my ownership on engine replaced at 23k).

It also gets a oil/brake fluid change after Ring trips - no need for me to do it before as it's only usually been about 3 months since the last one

No change to the noise, I checked the book and I'd actually done less than 7000 on the oil. Wondering if I'm being over sensitive or if there is a problem developing.
NB service reset indicates 15500 miles to service. I'll change it in 7500!

I'll make an effort to record the sound it and check with the specialist I use.

I thought mine made a tappety sound. Took it to cpc for its service (oil service) and Phil confirmed not really a noise to be concerned about as these tend to be noisy tappety type engines and it would be pretty evident from the sound if it's a bearing or follower type noise. Although he did show me a black 06 z4m he was working on that had had worn followers and spun a bearing (not sure if the owner is on this forum)! Expensive repair bill!

If your sound is a genuine tapping sound an oil change will do nothing, the problem with a sound clip is it could be a loose mount bolt of some sort or it could be a serious issue, take it to a trusted indy

I have that sound from cold too, and my indy tells me it's normal. It hasn't got any worse but it is a little annoying. I'm still used to creamy smooth italians..
