Tappet noise on start up

Forgive me if this one has been raised before!

Z4 3.0si when left for a few days has excessive tappet noise occasionally, lasting a few seconds only. I put this down to standing for a few days, say 4-6 days in its heated garage and nowt to worry about.

However, some days the tappet noise remains for longer, maybe up to 1-2 minutes. The noise goes after its driven down the road (carefully) once it gets warm. But surely this is tooooo long to sound like a bag of nails?

Mechanic friend suggest a top end treatment oil additive, made by Forte of Wynnes (other makes are avail  )

Should I be concerned? :driving:

Thanks

It is the dreaded HVA issue. A few seconds is fine, but 1-2 minutes is not good.

This should help

Thanks for reply; Bugger! Read three pages of the link and gave up - tooooo depressing. I reckon my 2008 car / 39k miles might struggle under warranty!!!!

Is the oil additive worth a blast as its £15 rather than £3000.....?

If you have a warranty and can demonstrate the issue they will do something with enough pressure, but it won't be a head replacement like I had. They stopped doing that later on. Although the later fix is more hit and miss.

Still worth trying to get sorted under warranty though.

As far as I'm aware nobody's car has ever been damaged by this occurance, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Before full panic mode & sleepless nights kicks in i'd be doing a oil change followed by some decent drives (over 30 miles decent revs )

Thanks for advice, much appreciated. It's only a car!! I have tried some Wynn's Hyd Valve Lifter Treatment tonight. Hope it does what it says on the tin (bottle); "Releases sticking valves. Quietness noisy valve lifters". Will advise in a few days....

Mr Wilks offers sensible advice

Had oil change at specialist (Four Ashes near Wolverhampton) incl some oil additive - not only as the tappet noise gone car sounds and feels super smooth too. It's relatively low miles and wasn't overdue an oil change but all is well on the western front (for now).

Car is away for its winter sleep, next start up will be after 4-6 weeks so a good test.

oh dear, hope its not the HVA fault, fingers crossed

This issue is hardly a "fault" as it causes no reliability or running issues, it's not worth losing sleep over imho.
