Tailgating cameras

Apparently they are trialing a camera on the M1 in Northamptonshire that can tell if you are tailgating the car in front.

“Highways England has stepped up its efforts to curb tailgaters with the help of new roadside cameras.
Technology that can detect if vehicles are travelling too close to each other is being trialled on the M1 in Northamptonshire before it’s rolled out across the country.

The new system has recorded 26,000 tailgating vehicles in the first two months of the trial. That’s 419 drivers a day breaking the Highway Code’s two-second minimum gap rule.
Rather than prosecuting offenders, the police have sent warning letters in the post to reinforce the message to leave a safe distance between vehicles. Drivers can usually be fined £100 and handed three penalty points on their licence.

Of the 26,000 tailgaters who received letters, 3,700 were repeat offenders. Some drivers were spotted tailgating up to 12 times on the same 150-metre stretch of road where the cameras have been installed.”

Keeping to the 2 second rule at 70mph works out at 63 meters that’s almost 15 e89 car lengths. Now I’m in total agreement with trying to stop tailgaters but can you imagine the tailbacks that this is going to cause.
Also when I did my speed awareness course the instructor said that should be doubled if it was wet!

Don’t think you’d get 15 E89’s between those chevrons painted on some motorways would you...? :? AFAIK those are the 2 second rule.

Got to be a good thing though no....tailgating was the number one hate in a survey a while back and we all know why....damn dangerous and sooooooo annoying.

Would be nice if the same cameras could do the middle lane hogging dipsticks too as Flying says..... :driving:

I’d add those cars pulling out into the fast lane @ 55-60 just in front of the path of a car doing “70” ish to the list

And no doubt the car behind would be the one to get done for tailgating.

Especially if you speed up to let them past :poke:

As much as I can't abide tailgating, if you leave a sensible gap people just pull out into your gap and make you have to brake. :headbang:

Sounds like just another way of raising some money at very little cost.

Ive commuted almost 100 miles daily with the zed for aproximately 2 years now, would be 3 but covid wfh. Anyways all my miles are motorway journeys and honestly i think its because the uk doesn't mandate tests on motorways. And the understanding of using the other two lanes for overtaking does’nt seem to cross their knowledge.

Eitherway seems like a money grab scheme. Next its going to be anything that isnt electric on the road sky high costs.

So if the guy in front slams on the brakes and the guy behind gets done for tailgating. Plod need to get out and arrest some real villains instead of targeting drivers and playing politics.

Those "professional" lorry drivers are f*cked then as they are the worst tailgaters out there. Usually behind each other.

Surely they would have to provide a means for the driver to know they were tail gating, before there could be a prosecution. Fair enough if there are markings on the road.

But without them, even Audi drivers have rights.

Cameras....not plod....cameras, says that in the first post.

If there’s a camera you’d think a driver slamming on would be seen and ignored.

Refers to the police in the first post as well. I tend to leave a gap larger than most drivers but I doubt it is 63m.

This is an absolutely terrible idea  as said above, what if someone pulls out in front of you whilst you're leaving a safe gap, causing you to slam your anchors on? To the camera, you'll look like a tailgater.

This 2 second gap nonsense only works in books and on closed roads. Anyone who commutes to work during rush hour will know its impossible to leave that gap without some eejit jumping into that space.

The only real way to catch a tailgater is by using undercover vehicles or cameras which can travel a distance. Static cameras are no good for this type of stuff.

You aren't a real 'professional' driver unless you can get within touching distance of the rear of another hgv  they love a bit of slipstreaming. Shame it usually ends in tears when the one in front crashes

They do that so that the overtake time is reduced. Think about it, if one truck is going 1 MPH faster than another, it would slow the outside lane for far longer, if they had to start the overtake maneuver from further back.
You would soon moan if trucks where constantly overtaking to "stay safe"
Why would the one in front crash Ben ?

You never seen a pleb in a car pull in front of a lorry to take an exit at the very last second on a motorway?

I did have a photo of a car that had been crushed due to tailgating lorries that happened a few months back here. It was not a pretty sight  I didn't take the photo, just saw it online.

Sounds like you're condoning tailgating for hgv's

I have attended plenty of accidents to cut said plebs out of their cars when it goes wrong Ben, alive and dead.
Not condoning tailgating mate, but think about what I said, how long it takes a truck to overtake another truck or Mrs Migins doing 54 on the motorway. Before long, we would all be doing 55
