Suspension refresh

My coupe has just gone past 75k miles and, as far as I know, is still on its original suspension components. I'm assuming that it would benefit from an overhaul particularly at the front.

Is this a good idea as there's nothing actually wrong with it or am I wasting my money?

If I go ahead where's the money best spent - springs, dampers, control arms, bushes??? I'm confused!!

Personally I would go with "If it aint broke, don't fix it"

If you do decide to do something though, I would think what you do depends on what you want, i.e., lower, more comfortable etc etc

:driving:

If you want the refresh, new dampers, springs (Eibachs ;) ), powerflex bushes would be a good start.

However, if it ain't broke, and you're not fussed, leave it.

Mine had the bushes done at 60k. Well worth refreshing these if the cornering gives you some body roll.

My Zed has just turned over 70,000 miles and I have been thinking something similar at least as far as the bushes go.
I'm undecided on whether to go with Powerflex or stick with OEM as some people have complained of groaning and creaking from the Powerflex ones.

That said a recent MOT which picked up nothing wrong with any of bushes etc, does make me errr to the 'if it ain't broke broke' side of the fence, especially as that is what I constantly preach at work.

Pus as soon as u take apart the suspension, you need to pay for the alignment to be reset!!!

I don't mind paying for the alignment as I want to get that done regardless. What suspension work is likely to improve tram-lining the most?

I recently had new track rod ends and tie bars after 55000 miles as there was a fair bit of play in the tie bars. had the alignment done after and it felt like a new car... Much less twitchy

You don't know it ain't broke unless you get it checked out... The suspension is so stiff and if you're still on run flats the punishment on the suspension parts is quite harsh. I didn't know my tie bars were knackered until I went to get an alignment done and the numbers kept changing on the machine due to the worn parts.

I think I'm going to ask Forza West to take a look and see what they recommend before sorting the alignment. I've heard good things about them, any one here used them?

Yes and highly recommended. They really know their stuff. Wouldnt trust anyone else with mine going forward.

I had two tyres fitted at the weekend and the friendly fitter showed me how to check bush wear as he had found the n/s front bushes had play in them. You could see the difference between o/s and n/s easily. He said BMWs in general suffer from uneven wear biased to the n/s. Mines a 53 plate with 65k done and nothing in service history regarding any suspension work having been carried out previously.

This leads to a question if it's ok?

I have the m suspension fitted and can't find out if I need different bushes from standard and could anyone recommend anything?

Seems to be a hot topic lately, plenty of threads going about.

I've just ordered the full Meyle HD lower wishbones, bushes and drop links. I'm also having the front ARB bushes replaced with OEM.

I do have some play in the NSF wheel so one side needed doing anyway, but thought I might aswell freshen the whole thing. Its done around 90k and feels loose compared to my previous Z4, so much so I CANNOT drive it without sport on, as the wheel feels just too 'loose' and wanders without any input.

I may also throw on some H&R springs, as my previous had these. While speed bumps become a 5mph affair, it was tight and sure footed. The current Z4 feels uneasy at 'high' speed, so much so its not comfortable to drive on a motorway at 'high' speed. It just doesn't feel planted, it needs constant corrections, but as I say, there is significant play on the NSF wheel.

I will have the wheel rebalanced and the tracking done at the same time as the above fitting.

Well my order is now in for the Meyle lower wishbones and rear bushes. Be glad to see the back of the poly bushes and their creaking and groaning.

also ordered HD drop links and from BMW OEM stabiliser bar bushes.

Anything else I forgot while I'm sorting that end of the car out?

Are the Meyle rear bushes oil filled like the OEM ones? If I decide to keep the car another couple of years, I'm considering a front end overhaul too although it's still feeling pretty tight at 60k.

I'll tell you when they arrive

I'm changing now at 81k

EBC Ultimax discs and red stuff pads
Power flex bush's
Rogue engineering mounts
Control arms
Eibach pro springs
Tarox brake lines
Motul brake fluid

Will hope the refresh does some good!
