Ok so im a bit scared now, hit pot hole few weeks back and it created a rattle in the boot, quick look and a screw had come out the trim... Fine I thought, order a new screw.... Whilst waiting for new screw to arrive i hit another pot hole (was driving on new roads and was hidden but a puddle) and then I noticed it was a bit worse than I thought, a few clips/screws turned out to be missing (from vibrations I assume) so I've now got all the new parts and went to fit then.....

I started by trying to remove the trim as I needed to look for some clips, the trim won't come out easy and I can see why, there's a metal thread sticking up and it has broken the plastic dome and now the trim is kind of hooked on the metal thread, tryed wiggling etc and noticed that the metal thread is loose and also moves, should this move? Is it the top of something to do with the suspension underneath?

i now know i need a new piece of the plastic trim which isnt so bad, but what sort of damage could that thread being loose mean? should i stop driving, is it proper knackered ? :/
 
Maybe shock top mount broken?

Z4 do have lot of same parts with E46, and e46 it is normal that rear shock top mounting parts fail.
 
Thanks for help guys, just took it to garage quickly and they said I need new rear shock and top mount :(

Im guessing it's best to replace both at once rather than just 1 side?

Any recomendations ?
 
Always best to replace both sides but, if on a real tight budget, you could get away with just one if the other shock and top mount are in perfect condition. Not ideal though. I have just renewed my top mounts using replacement Meyle at £15 for the pair, easy job. Rear shocks are from £55-up to several hundred each, depending on how special you want them to be. From a 3.0 Si but I think should fit any E85/E86 up to 09/10. Best to check though if you are interested.
