Supersprint Installed & Reviewed

Purchased the Supersprint race exhaust which includes the resonator delete option (a new x-pipe between the cats and the mufflers with no resonator). My sole purpose was to have a better sounding car - one that actually sounds like a sports car! I don't need a few more HP - 330 is enough for me. I know sound is objective but I wanted a deeper tone but not too loud and certainly not raspy or with any droning. I consulted with the Supersprint dealer and was told that the sport mufflers would be too much like stock and this is what I should buy.

Installation was a pleasure. Everything fit perfectly. Unlike what I read here in another post, mine were well made with nice even welds. I didn't realize how ugly the OEM mufflers were until I gazed at the back of my car when I was finished and saw these little oval beauties.

But then I started it up. Again I say, sound level is an objective thing. One person's "too loud" is another's "not loud enough". But to me it was really too raspy and loud under acceleration. I'm not a kid and I really hate the sound of those Subarus and Hondas driving around with those "mufflers" with the 5 inch diameter tips - and this setup sounded a bit like that. Normal acceleration from a standing start was way louder than I expected with droning from 2 - 3K. Second or third gear with half or more acceleration would get anyones attention within 500 yards. Foot off the pedal and it got very quiet like you turned off a switch. It just was not what I expected and I was very disappointed.

I called Supersprint and told them my story. They did not agree with the dealer's description of what the sound levels would be. They said the sport mufflers are louder than stock and the race mufflers are even louder. I asked if it would make much of a difference if I put the OEM x-pipe back because of the resonator. They said yes, it would help.

Well it more than "helped". I am now a VERY happy Z4 M owner. The sound is perfect for me. Still loud enough but much deeper - no raspy sound at all. Not as blaring when accelerating but also louder than before when decelerating so the sound is much more even. And all droning is gone. And the dealer agreed to take the x-pipe back and refund my money. He said they can't keep these systems on the shelf so he would have no trouble selling it. Still very generous of them. So I though my experience would possibly help anyone who is considering a Supersprint purchase.

The problem with aftermarket exhaust is that they are simply that and BMW go to great lengths to match the exhaust to the engine, personally I love the standard exhaust and I loved the metallic rasp on my old M3. I always found that whenever someone changed their exhaust they were unhappy with the extra boom and that for me was the reason I didn't bother, personally I think the best combination would be the OEM exhaust with free flowing 100 cell cats, a tad extra performance but no boom

Good review! I like the standard set up but would seriously consider changing back boxes.

Like you I want to pitch the sound between stock which is LOUD for a standard BMW exhaust system and Impreza drainpipe loud which is too noisey when normally driving. A switchable exhaust valve would be the answer I guess to give us the best of both. I think some Astons have this option now

Centre resonantor delete on the S54 produces poorer acoustics with no power gains. I had the SS X-pipe on my M3 and it was raspy as hell! I've jst changed the rear boxes on my Z4M Roadster to the Eisenmann Race rear cans and they sound very sweet. Deep and throaty but no rasp.

I love the M3 sound, but i think the standard set-up on the Z4M has an even nicer, dare i say more sophisticated sound.

I find the standard Z4M sound more musical and much less boomy than the 3.0 Z4 (which i found annoying sometimes)

When it comes to volume, it helps having a Roadster when you are running the standard setup, naturally.

I love the popping sound too when lifting off the throttle. In fact, I think i giggled like a small child during the test drive when i first heard that and it pretty much sold me the car! :D

Has anyone any experience with Remus exhausts on M3 or Z4M?? Local BMW specialist says their good quality and very reasonable in price compared toSupersprint (about half)

Could it be that you guys on the other side of the pond have different mufflers? To me the stock setup was very much like my friend's 325, way too tame. A bit of rasp would have been great, but the x-pipe rasp was outrageous.

Sammyz to answer your question only five years after it was asked, I have Remus back boxes and they sound great :P

I read on forums that Supersprint are great at first then tend to drop to bits?

Obviously I read this on the internet, so it could be complete bollox

I had a supersprint cat-back in my barchetta
Had it for 4 years, bang it on a speed bump more then a few times
And in my opinion it was indestructible
It doesnt evpen had a bent on the places where it was polishing speedbumps..

I went with custom job in the end. Deeper sound than standard. Very personal thing as to what you want from an aftermarket system but i agree that aftermarket systems seem to loose that mechanical rasp the OEM one has.
