Hey people
Looking for a supercharger for the 3ltr zed, ESS prefferable but whats out there????. oh and at sensible money as well please. or if anyone knows how to get more bang for my bucks let me know.
cheers
Personally I'd aim for a Rotrex kit, after seeing great results in the VAG scene. Some people even turned down the boost as they were getting too much!
Rotrex really needs revs, and the 3.0i isn't the most revvy engine. As a bolt on system running say 7psi that the engine can take ok without altering compression ratio etc, you will get maybe 100bhp, so 330bhp.
However, because Rotrex run centrifugal compressors, you won't get 7psi at say 2000rpm, so the delivery will be very spiky. It might not feel like 330bhp until you get up over 4000rpm, and then you will only have 2000rpm left.
Basically, it'll transform the feel of the car into something that it isn't. It'll kinda be like an M but without the bottom end.
The ESS package on the other hand retains the character of the OEM delivery/feel of the engine. Ie, you gain a similar torque benefit in the low/mid range as you do at the power end (slightly more power)
Rotrex however is cheap, but it is a fairly poor way to add power all over. Depends what you want the car for really...
Interesting summary Dave. While I'd like more power the characteristics that you describe of the rotrex would to some extent destroy the driving pleasure of the Z4 where the power delivery is available throughout the rev range. Move it more towards a track day special.
Bottom line is that frankly the supercharger route is a nice idea but it's a far bettr option to just trade in and buy an ///M given all the extras from brakes to rear diff that come with that as standard.
Interesting summary Dave, I am yet to read any write-ups on them fitted to a BMW engine so that is interesting (all the feedback I have ever heard was based on the VAG VR lump).
As cj10jeeper says there is a lot of extras you need to think about before just bolting a charger onto the car, brakes are the first and most obvious, again I'm not up to speed on the differences between the 3.0 and ///M versions yet
I'd love to ESS supercharge mine, but it just doesn't make financial sense.
I bet they are fantastic of course, but an M just comes off the shelf sorted for 340bhp.
Doing suspension and brakes etc to the Z4 3.0 would hurt the resale, so lots of time/effort reverting/reselling the parts come resale to get a good price + more specialist insurance etc.
Of course, cars are never cheap, and it'd be unique, and fun to do...
That is my conflict, and I guess anyones who considers this kinda tuning to their car!

I would agree that there would have to be a braking upgrade if you were to go down the supercharging route, after all you gotta stop, I had been looking at a company called G power from Germany. ( http://www.g-power.de/308.html?&L=1 ) who do a DIY bolt on kit for around £3700 delivered, and promising 306 bhp which looks good on paper.
But I think with all things considered an //M is the way to go as cj10jeeper said and its all sorted for you, but the problem is always getting rid of your car first (anyone want one just ask).
