Apologies if this is a repost, but did anyone see the Sunday Times InGear article at the weekend "Aarrgh - My Car's Got Electronic Overload" ?

There is a table of the top 10 most unreliable cars in terms of electrical faults with the stats coming from Warranty Direct, and our dear old Z4 is number 3 apparently.

The article hasn't quite got its facts straight as it refers to the 03 - 09 model having a folding hard top, but it does make you wonder whether the stats could be correct.

I know a fair few E89's with electrical problems/ gremlins.

Cant think of many on the E85/6.. aside from the usual dodgy o2 sensor and coil packs (but they would be maintenance surely)

1) Renault Megane (02-09)
2) Peugeot 607 (00-10)
3) BMW Z4 (03-09)
4) Renault Modus (04-now)
5) Audi A2 (00-06)
6) Land Rover Range Rover (02-now)
7) Land Rover Discovery (04-now)
8) Audi A3 (03-now)
9) Smart Roadster (03-now)
10) Audi A4 convertible (05-09)

So they are definitely referring to the E85/E86 rather than E89.

As with all such things you need to look at the statistics. This abstract of the survey is looking purely at electrical which accounts for 46.25% of the Zeds faults. Transmission is zero as another example.

If you look at it across all reliability categories it comes out bang in the middle which woulddn't make much of a news article

Given it's a softtop I'd expect electrical (hood motor, etc.) to rate that higher.

Average cost £260. Plug in Merc SL and you come out with £742

Surprised to see as many German as French cars in that list. I bet the first Japanese car comes in at around 150.
