Car is currently at BMW getting service done. They said the threads for the sump are gone and as a result cant put the plug in. They have quoted £1000 for new sump which seems crazy. I spoke to an independant guy who can do Helicoil. Only thing with this is the sump would have to come off before this is done as dont want any swarf etc getting in engine, is this a big job? or can it be done saftley leaving the sump on? Any help on this greatly appreciated.

how did it get cross threaded/over tightened, presume the dealer is not admitting responsibility.

If the service history is BMW only then I'd be asking how their expensive, professionally-trained, super-technicians managed to damage it in the first place.

I'm with mmm-five on this... And if it is just BMW who have serviced it they can pay to fix it with a new sump.

x2, this is what I was getting to.

After much debate over whos fault it is, its all sorted now with a shiny new sump. As for removing and replacing the sump they were quoting 3 hours labour.
