Sudden Z4 owner

After a couple of years of thinking of giving up biking, I finally took the plunge. But what to replace a sports tourer bike with? A friend (wiser than me) called me a month ago and said he'd sold his bike. 'What are you going to do?' I asked, bereft at the thought of no more get-togethers.

'Bought a Z4.'

Turns out it is a dark grey 04 plate 3.0i Auto. I saw it, drove it, loved it. I remember the 1st Z3 I saw 20 odd years ago (Great West Road, Glasgow), and remembered how much I liked it's looks.

So two weeks ago I flew to Bristol and ended up with a 03 plate 3.0i Manual, in superb nick. 87000 mile full BMW service history, one owner. Filled with trepidation I took it to my tame mechanic (in Duns, in the Scottish Borders) who gave it a once over, pronounced himself pleased, finding only a broken rear anti roll bar (£35 for the part £35 to fit it). He also found new rear springs, new front shocks, new brake pipes, 4 new tyres. And all on the car!

Another pal just got a Mazda MX5, which I had a drive of last night. A good car, but not a great car. The Z4 is superlative.

Only downside was a bang on the road last night. Got home - broken front spring.

So Brothers and Sisters, I am glad to have come across your fraternity, and I look forward to many happy hours browsing this site, and many happy hours more putting the tips into practice. 1st replace the springs. 2nd attack the rattles. 3rd..? Perhaps I might paint the brake callipers.

Yours Aye

Mark

Welcome to the mad house. Sorry to hear you've had a wee bit of trouble with the spring but at least it's not too bad. Great time to be enjoying the car

Welcome Mark - you will love the car great fun and the 3.0 is rapid - ask the biker we left behind a few weeks ago on the Bristol Sunday morning run out lol

Hope the weather is kind for you to get out and enjoy the beastie

Welcome along! That's a decent first drive to get to know her well. Sounds like it has been well kept too - enjoy! You will have the roads for it up there :driving:

Excellent story, congratulations

Last time I was in Scotland we did the road from Duns to Edinburgh... Awesome driving, I'm very jealous of the hooning you have at your doorstep :driving:

Aye, the Borders is (are?) great. Quiet roads, not much traffic. A few speed cameras here and there...

We've just given up touring on a triumph sprint gt and have to say the Z 4 is a fantastic replacement :driving: .

Hi, I'm sure you will enjoy the car :driving:
I've still got a couple of bikes but I don't use them very much anymore, I just can't bring myself to sell them though

If you want a front spring super cheap hit me up. My old set is doing nothing in my bedroom right now.

Darn it!, ordered two new ones yesterday... (and a low profile trolley jack)

Welcome Mark. Look forward to seeing the pictures and wish you many happy days with the Zed

Another ex biker here too - a friend of mine told me to get a drop top (He has an SLK 350) and he was right.

We went MX5 to Zed as well (via a short affair with a TVR Chimeara).

Great cars and the bonus of the roof down - magic!

Watch out for the Scottish meets - some great fun to be had enjoying membership with other forumites.

:driving:
