Stuck in your career..

Anyone else had this? I'm totally unhappy with my job, don't get any satisfaction from it and there's no improvement in my work for this company in the future neither :( Had a chat at work already about this and it confirmed my feelings about my future at this company. Just so tired of this work, totally boring and not challenging at all. Sad thing is it's been dragging on for years now and I've lost confidence in making a change :( I want to make a change and want to do something different, even considering studying at the Open University in my spare time too, but have lost the plot at what to do :roll: Too many things going on in my head these days and it makes it all the more difficult to just relax and have a clear mind to think about what I really want :(

Next step is that I might get some professional career advice. But as this come with a serious price tag, I wonder if it's any helpful?

Driving the Z with the top down does help a little bit, but not enough, if only I could get paid for that :rofl:
 
If you had to say now, what you wanted to do, or is there one thing you regularly fantasise about doing (for work, keep it clean folks) what would it be?

You can always make a change, it's just making the break. My experience is once you're in this mindset, it's just a matter of time
 
Seriously look at what you want to do with your life what you enjoy and what sort of work you would enjoy, then find out how much it pays and if it can support your lifestyle.

But above all secure another position before throwing in the towel with the company your with, believe me its easier to get a job when you have one than to be in the market desperate for one.

I have been out of work for a year and a half, the first year was a sabbatical and i casually looked for jobs, i wanted to do all sorts and change from what i have done in the past but after trying for loads of different employment sectors i got no where as they all expected me to leave and go back to IT (which is my background) and i have been for every type of job but got no where..
 
Few people I know are in their ideal job, and lots would love to do something else. My circumstances are that I find my job challenging, and I'm fairly happy doing what I'm doing.

However, in an ideal world, I would change from finance to something in the automotive industry. When I was younger (only a couple of years ago) I had a tough call to make about giving up the day job to be full time DJ and music producer. I think I made the right choice by always wonder....
 
i know exactly how you feel. i went through the same thing over the last few months of my previous job. i was stuck in a job that although i got job satisfaction, it came at a price. a commute of over 1.5 hours a day. fuel and parking of £300 a month, and management who were keen to always shuffle things around every couple of months for no reason whatsoever

i was working for an agency who contracted me to another company who then again used me based permanently at a customer site. as such, there would never be a chance of progression or pay increase as none of the management cared less and saw me just as a head and means of getting the job done. i considered a career change but no one would give me a second look as although i have gcse's, a levels and a degree, they wanted experience, not potential.

so i eventually landed a job locally to me last month but i had to take a small decrease in wages, increase my hours and reduced my annual leave. however, i get a fuel allowance and car allowance to top up my wages..... i dont have a long commute, 15 mins each way and there is more chance of progression. however the company is pretty small and i have to work a lot harder that previously and there is a learning curve as i have to pick up how the new place does things and who the people i need to speak to are.

i can only advise that you start looking at alternative jobs immediately rather than leave your job first but there's not a great deal of ideal jobs out there
 
Thanks all. It's the job satisfaction that I'm missing and no chance of progression that is hitting me the most. I need to get my mind clear now and try to figure out what I'd like to do and perhaps start a study that can help me move into another direction. Going to be tough but should be better than my current situation. And yes, ideal jobs, I think there will always be something with every job :roll:
 
Don't bin the job you're in, but do start thinking about what you might like to do. Having a talent and passion for what you do makes for a rewarding job.
 
I'm stuck in mine as well. I was stupid enough to pick a career that is generally full of people in their 20s who are willing to work all the unpaid extra hours for a relatively low wage. As I rapidly approach 40 I feel more and more anxiety about where I'm going. Even more so now that I have a family. At 36 I'm at the top tier of my career so no more rungs to climb or big wage rises in the future.

I go through this anxiety phase every couple of months and every time I know what the solution is. I need to set up on my own. I like to think that every time I get a little closer to making the leap. I probably wouldn't make much more than I currently do (although the possibilities are there judging by my bosses lifestyle/car). It's about securing my future, being the master of my own destiny.

I still enjoy what I do (most of the time) and I'm good at it.
