Have re installed my Whippy aerial. Couldn't get a decent signal out of the radio with the Stubby fitted.
Shame because I prefer the Stubby look :headbang:

There are also intermediate solutions.

Sorry its a german listing but I'm sure an english translated one can be found.
Better reception than the stubby but less 'whippy' than the whippy.
It's exactly the same antenna (same design with the wrapped around wire, same lenght/sizerubber base etc) as the whippy, but only 24cm long.
Gives a very nice 'stock look' without being too whippy.
But there are plenty slightly different variations around on this.

It's amaizing how much is written about sizes and general looks of radio antennas on cars....

I’ve never even considered changing mine. Not like it’s an extendable chrome thing you used to replace with a coat hanger :D

I had both stubby and whippy on my first 2 Coupes and didn't notice any difference in the FM reception - although it's usually pretty terrible anywhere within a few miles of where I live.

On my current car I've got a semi-whippy like the ones in the link above and that also works fine.

I'm sure someone on here said the wing aerial was for AM and the FM one is inside the rear bumper!

That's not true. The FM tuner/reception in the z4's radio is based on a diversity antenna system.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_diversity
So regarding FM reception, the tuner uses both antenna's (the whippy and the bumper antenna).
For AM reception only the normal antenna is used afaik. But who listens to that

Thanks that makes sense.

I wasn't convinced, which is why I phrased what I said the way I did!

I've tried both antennas and I can honestly say the exhaust note is equally as sweet with either one installed :poke:

 :driving:

Fkn radio just gets in the way of my favorite song

I'm with you! Hardly ever turn the thing on.

Although you must remember to turn it on every month or so and crank it up to full volume, otherwise it fills up with unused radio waves and eventually won't work at all. Have to burn them off. :D
