Struts

Hi guys, I have been looking around at a lot of DIY videos that some z4 owners have on YouTube, and cane across this guy '' Zed4me'' he has videos explaining how he changes the front and rear struts, but more importantly why he's doing it, he said that over time the struts weaken and could brust up through the hood of the car?? Not sure how accurate this statement is, maybe you guys can explain if and how this could happen, because he's got me a little paranoid thinking maybe I should buy one of these reinforcement kits.

I think I have seen that video on YouTube also. The statement is a bit exaggerated, but that's not to say it can never happen. My top mounts are pretty fucked - the black rubber has split right round. It has went over small bumps on the road (typical UK roads) but my struts have never exploded through the bonnet lol. However, I won't now be driving it after realising this.

General rule of thumb, if you see the rubber deteriorating/splitting - replace them as soon as. They aren't that expensive after all. And yes, reinforcement plates are a good idea too

Hope this helps

Only seen that on Porkers the RS models have a habit of punching the front struts out over curbs on track.
Not a common issue on the Z4 that is for sure.

On Beedub’s advice, I fitted OEM strut tower reinforcement plates when I swapped to KW Clubsports. I did so in order to lessen the risk of damage to the top of the strut towers from very stiff suspension, low profile tyres and crap road surfaces. They fit within the tower and work with a strut brace to effectively sandwich the vulnerable strut mounting. If you aren’t replacing the OEM suspension, fitting them would probably be overkill, but if you’re there anyway, they add about £14 to the cost of swapping the struts.
