I've had both. The design is clearly different when you compare the two back to back, and I wouldn't ever put an m3 one back on my Z4.
My choice of course.

Nothing particuarly scientific I'm afraid. Comparing the two mounts (not the bar, which is identical I'm pretty sure) to my untrained eye seems to show slightly different load paths, I was surprised at the differences at the time I seem to remember, though it was 3 years ago or so now. If the design was the same there would be no need for BMW to invest in making two different parts, and certainly the difference is more than the Z4 one having a silver bar as opposed to a black one for the m3.
That and the fact I could never get the m3 one to fit correctly without shimming it one way or the other (I forget what was needed) means as I said, I wouldn't chose to fit an m3 one again. I'm sure there are many m3 brace users who get on just fine, as I said it's just my choice/opinion
