Strip Wax/Polish etc with Fairy Liquid??

Hi guys,

Im planning on giving the zed a complete clean on sunday. Chances are at the moment there will be numerous old layers of wax and polish that i would like to try and get rid of before re-applying. I've seen on here that some people say using fairy liqud will completely strip the car back of all products and give you a fresh base to start on. But ive always understood it that you should never use fairy liqud as it is very high in salt (or somthing) and that it will actually damage the paint?

Also on a bit of a side note, this is my plan for washing

Wash (Possibly with fairy liquid)
Clay
Wash
Dry
Polish
Wax

Does that sound about right??

Cheers

Charlie

Sounds good, and Fairy Liquid is fine. I wouldnuse Tardis on it too, which will remove all the tar spots which clay won't be able to get...but up to you.

Rinse it off well after the clay, and if you can use 2 buckets with a grit guard then great, but if not don't worry too much

NO - wouldn't do it as Fairy Liquid contain salt (makes glasses shine etc).

Thick liquid detergents contain a fair percentage of sodium chloride. Without salt the detergent solution would be very runny. A dilute solution of detergent on the bare metal parts of a car would have the effect of degreasing and thoroughly wetting the metal. The electrolyte solution, containing sodium and chloride ions, would facilitate corrosion. So even if you use it on the outer surface the solution would find its way into joints etc and the rest is just a matter of time.

Well thats what I kinda thought. But you can only go on what you read on the internet.

Looks like it wont get stripped down this time then. WIll just have to give it a couple of good washes.

Whats the best for removing old wax and polish??

Autosmart Tardis is pretty good and then complete clay as a base preparation followed by whatever wax/polish use use.

From the Zaino website

http://www.zainoeurope.com/index.php?_a=viewDoc&docId=6

It seems they advocate fairy liquid. I use fairy to clean my glasses, but got told off by my optometrist! Something about micro crystals??

No salt based product is going near my Zed - happy for others to take the Zaino advice!

Perhaps that's why so many 108s corrode - people have followed the Zaino advice..... just new it wasn't BMWs/BBS wheels fault :poke:

I see that nickm mentioned tardis aswell. Unfortunately the chances of me getting some before sunday morning is nil to none.
So this time i think i will just have to stick with normal car shampoo and my clay bar.

Knowing how cars that are parked on the beach all their lives suffer, i think i will agree that i don't want to go near my zed with any salt based product. lol.

I've used Meguirs Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner to good effect:

Should be a dealer near your somewhere, think Halfords do it in their larger branches.

Cheical guys strong wash ( bug bugger ) or a medium mix of Autosmart G101 will easily strip back old waxes / sealants. Tardis can work but I wouldnt personally use it for that said task. Many use washing up liquid for degreasing and stripping cars back and there has always been arguments of salt content in that such product. A chap whom works for a company manufacturing the stuff said not the case.

I can't see it doing much harm either, anybody who lives near the sea will get plenty of salt on their car as my dad will tell you and he is a mile inland.

So will you be doing yours with Fairy 'salt laden' Liquid?

TBH I have never thought about stripping mine back, always washed and then clayed when required and then waxed/sealed, never had a reason to strip right back that I know of.

But have you seen what will happen to your paint if you leave the likes of Tardis on there to long, it's all relative.

Apparently it lifts the coating on the lens :o

but that is why it's been suggested to use on a car as it will strip any coating which is what's required.

At the end of the day its personal choice.

If people ask they should expect an opinion - Fairy Liquid contains salt and corrodes. Autosmart Tardis will cause damage if left on for long but that's not the intention to leave it on for a long time or the advice on how to use it. Perhaps those that use Fairty Liquid could keep us updated on corrosion or not. Certainly wouldn't get the solution near 108s as this will seep between the joints of the star spoke and rim (if not sealed).

ah but that was my point

puzzled why after spending time washing and polishing the car building up layers of wax or polish you want to take it all off ??? :?
