Streaky Side Windows

This may be a non-problem, or might be mine.....


My side windows are damned streaky - after a wash or rain the seals seems to take a while to dry out, any lowering of the windows and then raising leaves them seriously streaked with water.

Anyone else have the problem? Is this an issue for water ingress to the doors that needs rectifying?

Or, do BMW window seals just take longer to dry out than my old Volvo?
 
I have this problem, especially annoying if I drop the hood just after washing and only 1/3 of the window gets wet as part of the hood retraction process. No idea if it's an issue or a rectify able trait but I either just pt the windows all the way down and then wipe when I get home, or (and this is especially anal, I know...) I will carry a very slightly damp chamois in the boot to correct the wet or dry marks when I stop :oops:
 
There are 2 causes of streaking.
Yours is simply that the wiper part of the seal, that often feels like velvet, is worn out and needs replacing.

Streaks that don't dry are grease, usually from the wiper mechanism, or overspill of polish, etc. again needs the source cleaning up and a new seal.
 
Generally does it on all cars, when the car has been wet dry the window glass then lower the window and use a dry cloth to gently dry off the rubber seals. Job done! May need to be repeated every couple of weeks depending on whether the car is left outside or not but works a treat for me. Always tend to carry a micro fibre cloth in the car though just in case :)

+1 Also carry a microfibre cloth for removing streaks, find it a bit frustrating after cleaning/polishing/waxing the car that the windows get streaky when lowered/raised (love driving, hate seeing the car dirty - so conflicted :oops: ). Interested in the costs of replacement window seals though if you find out, Chris.
 
One should fully lower windows whilst dropping the hood. :wink:

They will then be uniformly streaked, and you won't have to look at them!
 
Weekly wash today but no roof wash. Dropped the top to have 1/2 a wet window on each side :evil: normally just the bottom that suffers with doors opening!
 
Thanks, I'll ring and find out the price of a pair of window seals.

Its just the water streaks, that dry cloudy, no oil etc. I suppose they do get more work than hardtops!

It is number 5, but this site is not a good guide to price, just part numbers? However CooperBMW says £75.74, so on this occassion :cry:

Could try partsgateway.co.uk (or quarry motors, who generally respond quickly through that site), but they will be used so probably no better than the ones we have...

I think it's a risky wager, at best you will get smaller, finer streaks. I don't think it's possible to eliminate streaks entirely. And even if you did, how long before it starts streaking again? How often do you need to change windscreen wipers?

But if someone takes a chance, I'd like to know how it turns out. I'd like to be wrong on this one.
 
Only my driver side window has this issue, presumably as the passenger side hasn’t been used as much (my car is now 8 years old so understandable)

If we can get them for £30 each then i will buy
 
A word of caution to those thinking of buying new seals to resolve this issue. I've had mine replaced twice under warranty and they still streak. Pesonally I've given up and just wipe the streaks off.
 
Sounds like you have some fault with the way they are seated.

The inside edge of the wiper is coated with a velvet like surface and it's that which wipes off enough water to largely remove streaks.

Of course I doubt perfection but it's a case of how bad they are if others should consider the expense.
