Strange noise

I had a strange noise from the car this morning, sounded like something metallic was scraping along the ground. Looked underneath and couldn't see anything hanging down, and it doesn't happen all the time. Any ideas? :(
 
jack the car at the rear and check the rear springs, one may have snapped and be causing your metalic noise, can we have abit more detail on where the noise the noise is coming from please.

Went for another drive to see if the noise was still there and it was fine, no problems. Took it to BMW to have a quick look and the techie reckoned that there is a design flaw on the Z4M in that there is too big a gap between the brake caliper and the back plate which is prone to getting stones caught in there. Panic over hopefully :)

This was my first thought too.
