Strange issue..

Couple of nights ago, on way home from the shop, is driving down a stretch of dual carriageway at erm, about 70...

The road has a gentle sweeping downhill right hand curve to it, which I approached on a trailing throttle. As I got into the bend I noticed the traction light flashing, traction was half off as it always is in the dry. Thought nothing of it, maybe a break in the road surface etc, car s fine and stable.

Tonight, coming home, again in the dry and at similar speed, it did the same in exactly the same spot, I moved my foot to the brake just to feel, and sure enough the abs pump was operating.

Did a quick diagnostic with the launch back in the garage, without turning the car off in case there was a pending code which may have been lost on a restart, but nothing..

Hmm...

Thoughts?

Needless to say I drive that spot daily at the same speeds and have done for the last 18 months or so and never had this.

You've recently added an LSD which just might be causing some difference in wheel speeds that's confusing the car. That said, I haven't noticed that behaviour with mine.

+ new tyres recently fitted as well Mike :?

My initial thought was the LSD, however it has only happened twice in the exact same spot and I've now put over 2k miles on the diff. Think I'll get the alignment checked this morning, as want to reduce the rear toe a bit I think, the the ///M settings?

Dirty wheel speed sensor?

That was one of my other thoughts m8, ah well give me an excuse to play with my new Picoscope then! Once I've done Mr Tidy's brake pipes later that is.

Hi Mike,

Have you got shop stock in the boot? I've had the light flash (when system fully on) when the suspension doesn't move enough and a corner lifts changing load and wheel contact / road speed. Sharp bend over hump in the road.

If its a long corner and the outside of the boot is unloaded - thinking tool box or case of dog food over the inside wheel would this do it?

Nah, boot empty.

Think tonight I'll set the launch up to monitor the 4 wheel sensors and steering angle etc and record my journey home to look at later.

It's surely something slippy on the road surface such as diesel etc if it's happening in only one spot.

Cant see it being the LSD as I've had a few cars with quaiffe ones retro fitted that had a traction control system and never experience this.

Could be steering angle sensor.. sometimes they can go "Out"

Mine was and my TC / SC light kept flashing away even on slight bends on the motorway.

Try resetting it and all should be fine again.

How do you reset the steering angle sensor?

Not 100% sure as my specialist done it. But you need to plug in a laptop and it's either in DIS or Inpa you can go to the steering angle sensor and see how far "Out" it is...
You then should have the option to reset the sensor which means you go "Lock to lock" etc and tell the car where "0" is ie.. straight ahead.

I'll try and find some instructions on it.

I've had mine hooked up to INPA at home and the only reset option I found was for an e46. Would be interested if you have anything more specific.

Try this.. can't find much online about it but someone also said the E46 one works on the Z4.. but not sure.

This one uses DIS (GT1)
